Picked up a new toy...

By the information I found, H52 in fact the dual AC, M95 is definitely the assist handles, and M86 is indeed the wagon ornament package. D8B8 is Deluxe interior (D), 50/50 split bench (8) in Dark Blue (B8).

Did you dig for a build sheet yet?

Not yet, got home, unloaded and the rain started. I'll get out there tomorrow and start looking, any place I should start?

Is it really a 350 horse 440? Only has a single 2" exhaust, would a B body H pipe work, or is it going to be all custom?

It's actually rated at 225HP, not 350. I know the HP went down in '71 on everything except the Hemi and 340, but in '72 they also changed it to net HP rather than gross ratings (the 440HP was rated at 245 in '72, down 125 from the '71 because of the rating change). There is not gross rating for '72.

I would be surprised to find that was the original exhaust on there now, but I wouldn't be surprised to find that it's pretty-close if not a copy of what came on the car. Only the 440HP cars got dual exhaust, which exited out the sides, behind the rear wheels (as should the factory single exhaust on your car).

No B-body pipes will fit your car. No one makes H- or X-pipes for low-perf exhaust manifolds anyhow. It's going to be custom from the word "Go", and if you're lucky you'll find an exhaust shop with the original "bend cards" for a car that old. The exhaust MUST exit the side of the car; you don't want straight out the back with a wagon.

I doubt any muffler shop around here would even know what a bend card is. I'd like to swap in a set of HP manifolds, if I could find a decent pair for what I would pay anyway. :D The Y might be original, everything else has definitely been replaced. I'm going to go with 2.25" exhaust, with Dynomax Super Turbos an H pipe and have the tails turned down at the corners.

The HP ratings were changed, but I think the compression ratings dropped from '71-'72, who knows what else.

I did see it has an 8-3/4 rear too, when did they switch to the 9-1/4?

I have to pull the headliner out, it's dried out and coming apart. I'll clean that and the insulation out and get some Dynomat to replace it.

Only had a single exhaust pipe on it when I got...less motor or course. But when I pulled the build sheet it clear shows that it was optioned for dual exhaust. So clearly it was an option even on the low HP versions of the 440.

Don't think the 9 1/4 started being used until after 73.....74 and later I think.

The 9-1/4" came online in '71, but for some odd reason it was hit and miss for a few years. By '74, they were all 9-1/4" axles.

Any exhaust shop with a bender knows what a bend card is. It tells them how to bend the pipes to fit the car... it would take them forever and a lot of wasted pipe to eyeball an exhaust system in most cases.

The compression ratios on the HP engines dropped significantly from '71, but the low-perf engines didn't drop much at all, if any. I don't have numbers on hand, but your engine maybe went from 9:1 to 8.5:1.

I know what the cards are, we had them at my dad's shop. Unfortunately, that is long gone.

I was talking about the Jake-legs around here. They keep tailpipes for duals on trucks in stock, a few front and center pipes but that's about it.

I have to make some inquiries for a good, local, exhaust shop.

I found several build sheets in the wagon. I have one under the carpet...still there. One under the front seat...still in place as well. I removed the one from under the base of the back seat.

We have a guy locally that could probably tie a 3" pipe into a pretzel without kinking it. Most towns have one of those types hanging around... it'll probably just take a while to find him.

Yup we have a guy like that, and He's a mopar guy to boot! Been bending exhaust pipes since the 60's, Guy knows most of the old bend cards off by heart. He just recently moved into my area...he's been out at a shop about an hour away for years. My neighbor had him bend a new 2.5 dual exhaust on his 63 Impala.....absolutely beautiful work!!

ive also found build sheets behind door panals as well as behind the firewall insulation and above the glove box inside the dash frame.....but the back seat one is ALWAYS there on every mopar but its useualy the most trashed...but not all the other spots always have them

Right now there are 3 sheets of 1/4" plywood lying in the back and I can't get the rear door open. I'll work on that when we get home.

I parted out a 69 Chrysler 300 some years ago. It had a build sheet behind each of the front bumper brackets...where they attach to the front sub frame! Never seen that before.

Got the door open from the inside, removed the dry rotted headliner and corresponding insulation. Pulled the plywood and flipped the seats up, both back seats are in great shape, just need a good cleaning and some leather conditioner. Front seat is decent, has a couple splits on the driver's side and one on the passenger, a good cleaning, some conditioner and I'll wash up the towels and lay them back on the bottoms for now. The dash has one big crack right in the middle, and the rear plastics are chalky in the best spots and crumbling everywhere else.

The power windows aren't working, anybody have wiring diagrams? Are these like late model vehicles, as in if the driver's switch is inop all the rest are as well?

I pulled the rear door panel, I found the wire for the door lock actuator rubbing against the door. The outside handle looks like it may have been manhandled a few times, I may have to remove it and see if it's repairable.

Looks like I have a bunch of minor stuff to repair, nothing major seems to be wrong :helpme: and a whole bunch of cleaning. Come Monday I'll be pulling door panels, cleaning, checking switches and wiring.

well... I can tell you who to go to on the exhaust... bobby gentry in Denton.. If Chris is still there anyway.. I dunno anyone else that's ever hidden dual mufflers on a VW bug before and made it look good...
