I said I was going to do it...

I know someone who has such a top plate just lying around... I work with him. Worse yet, he bought it from a board member (v8440) and I brought it home when I picked up the Challenger. :D

Then, if you were really feelin' it, you could install this little gem. He makes his own base because Hurst doesn't, but he uses the Billet Plus guts. It does require the later cover, but I can't tell you how impressed I am with mine. Very nice stuff, and well worth the price in my book.

Would the nv4500 top cover be for sale? And any progress on those crewcab rear door panels? ;)

I'll ask him about the top cover. Once again, I completely forgot about the damned panels, even though I still have them. Every time I see 'em, I think, "Oh yeah!" then get distracted within the next 12 seconds by something shiny. :D

I have more than one late style nv4500 cover. I'll sell another one, same price-$75 plus shipping.

No worries Doc. They will be spares anyway...so whenever you "remember" or run out of shiney things to look it, will be fine with me. ;) :D

Looks good! What handles did you use? I have an idea on how to do mine, I'm just not sure which one I need.

Here is a pic for some one that can ID the handle.manual12.jpg

I used a reproduction '70 B-body non-console handle, with the mentioned home-made adapter on a Hurst Pro Billet shifter (which already has the two-bolt mounting arrangement used by most Hurst shifters). I think something similar would be necessary for the NV transmissions in the fullsize trucks but Cow would know better and I don't remember his setup. I haven't had a chance to monkey with one yet, but my buddy's all bent about one in his '99 now, so we may end up taking mine out temporarily to figure out how to wrangle one into his.

The shifter in the picture you posted is an E-body/'71-'74 B-body w/console piece. The Pistol Grip part ends just below the top of the boot (maybe 2" down)--right about equal with the large almost-horizontal fold seen in the boot. They obviously cut the factory shifter off and welded either an adapter or the Pistol Grip right to it. The setup shown, to be honest, doesn't look all that comfortable to shift as it's obviously very far forward. I think they were more determined to have one in there than they were concerned about how it would actually feel to drive. I would suggest removing your console/boot assembly and doing what I did--zip tie the Pistol Grip to the original handle so that the bottom of the PG's lower bezel is right at the same point as the original shift-knob threads (or a little further back towards the seat). Run it through the gears that way, and you'll know whether the angle feels right to your wrist. That's a much bigger deal than most guys think about (at least to me). The most important aspect is the angle of the grip in the rearward positions (2nd/4th/6th). Once you've got that worked out and it doesn't hit the dash, you can figure out a solid mounting arrangement.

Your best bets for a handle are either going to be the one I used ('70 B non-console, MP P4510610 or Hurst 5388585) or the '71-'74 B-body bench seat unit (P4510611, 5388580).

This is the '70 style:

...and this is the '71-'74 piece:

A full shot of the one shown in your photo (so you can see how much isn't there, and how they must've chopped their original shift lever):

There is a 6-speed indicator available, too. The font is all wrong, as it is on mine, but it's available. Of course, in my search I then found one with a more-correct appearance for mine

This is the one I should've bought... and I still may. The lettering is much closer to OE (the R is still wrong), though no one makes a perfect repro of any of them (none have the lettering inlaid from the back as original):

You're probably right... they look just as bad. The "straight up then suddenly turn into an E-body unit" setup really looks awful--like no thought was given to it feeling "right", it's just there to say you have one in your vehicle. I wanted mine to feel like it was engineered to be there, otherwise I failed to see the point in doing it at all.

Definitely not a '70 piece. It's an E-body style, but narrower, with a stick welded to the bottom of it after they cut off the area where it would bolt to a Hurst. Look at the angle at which the stick enters the bottom area of the grip, then look at mine or any other Mopar PG. Totally different. If you look at the link Cow posted, you can see them "ootside the boot". They look pretty feeble where you can't see them.

Like everything Pistol Grip related Gunslinger makes, it looks poorly executed and, well, just plain crappy. Their automatic grip is the height of gay, and check out their crappy A-body console adapter... it doesn't even come back towards the driver, it just leaves the handle way the hell over at the middle of the car. Unintuitive and not comfortable, which is exactly how I bet their truck PG feels. I'd rather start with the one I bought for a lot less money, then start making an adapter and if need be, hacking the bottom of the stick to make it work. Being inventive will save you about $80 (I paid $185 on Amazon Prime) and it'll definitely look, and probably feel and work, better.

I agree 100% with what Doc said. My Pistol grip is made of stainless steel on the 70 non-console B-body unit, and the grips are carved from real tiger grain wood.

i think ill pop in and be the asshole

i do NOT see the point of the pistol grip at all...the amount of time to position your hand correctly, and grab it youve allready been out shifted by granny in her camry ...oh but you say your hand was allready on it stroking it...well..go talk to jester
