The poor bastard just can't win for losing. :D

Remember the hapless fella from whom I purchased the T/A heads, X-heads, rocker gear and Center Line wheels with slicks at the Jefferson swap meet? Well, he'd told me he had a 340 shortblock he was looking to sell, and he'd like to get $1,500 for it. It was a rebuild that had never been started, with forged pistons and a steel crank, but had sat for a number of years (he didn't know how many). I remember telling Stretch I could probably get it for a grand, knowing this dude. I had his phone number, but decided I had enough 340s and didn't need to spend a grand on another one, so though I kept his digits I never pursued it.

Until this past weekend. Sparky decided it was time to unload it, and he flopped it on eßay. No reserve, $100 opening bid. Either he didn't know, or didn't think it was important to mention, but the pistons are TRW and only +.030". The reciprocating assembly is balanced. It's got a brand-new roller cam in it. It includes a Moroso 10-quart oil pan with a pass-through for the steering drag link, as well as a windage tray. I still wasn't necessarily willing to drop a grand on it, but I was definitely more interested having seen pictures.

I watched it, knowing engines don't sell well on auction sites because rarely do two people want the same engine. They're also a pain to ship, and he had a steep-ish mandatory $400 shipping charge... but he's only a couple of hours down the road. I messaged him via eßay, not revealing who I was, asking if it was OK to pick up the engine in person. No problem, he said. Best of all, the auction was ending at 2:46PM today. People are at work so sniping is nigh-on impossible without a service.

I did a rare thing today and logged into eßay from work to snipe it myself.

Final price? $593.53. So that's a set of T/A heads, a set of X heads, a set of standard LA mechanical rocker gear on expensive banana-groove shafts, and a complete 340 shortblock for a grand total of $818.53, plus whatever Stretch sticks me for the ride--he assures me it will be very expensive. He also called me some bad names. :D

Due to the diversionary tactics of this site's linking, I'm not gonna waste time trying to post a link. Just search for item 322317535174 or "1969 Mopar 340 engine rebuilt" in eßay's completed listings.

...and I would love to see his face when he finds out who the high bidder is. :bwuhaha:
Sadly, the big reveal was not to be. He couldn't be there to meet us, but he sent one of his employees instead. His employee gave me the windage tray, which I'm not sure I was supposed to get, and the mega-duty engine stand on which the engine was sitting. Seriously, this is one stout engine stand. Way better than any of the three I have, and probably 1,500lb capacity.

"Those look like the roller lifters for this engine. It's got a roller cam, so do those go with it?" He decided he'd better call the boss.
"He said you can have the lifters for another $50." So I bought those, and just sorta didn't mention the new bronze distributor/oil pump drive that was in the same box.

I took the huge racing pan, the pickup for which was already bolted to the engine. There wasn't an image on the auction, but there's a timing cover and some sort of cam drive beneath it, too... might be gears, for all I know. There was some money thrown at this engine at some point. That oil pump pickup is a work of art in and of itself. One piston looks a little dodgy but it's clear this engine's never been run. I'm going to check the crank and the rod bearing, and probably pull the piston to better inspect it. I might throw a new one in there, since single pistons are cheap. I won't know until I have a chance to inspect it, during which time I'm also going to pop the cover and not only find out what kind of cam drive is in there, but see if there's an identifiable cam number from which I can pull specs. It's definitely a pretty big solid roller.

So, $643 spent on the engine, $25 for lunch, and whatever it takes for me to refill Stretch's tank. I'm guessing $725 total. Six hours well-spent with the best of friends and a possibly-ready-to-rock 340 roller shortblock with God's personal oil pan? Priceless.

If you're ever near Bonduel, WI and hungry, the Red Rooster has a fantastic 1/2lb bacon cheeseburger. You won't regret it.

The "Home made fries" Are damn fine too!

It was a fun day for sure. Well worth the trip. The bounty is still in the back of my truck. I don't think I'm going back to P's place anytime soon! :D

Man what a killer deal....on everything! Any time you have a road trip to do car related stuff with good friends is a darn good day!

Well, things certainly took a serious turn today upon closer inspection of the engine. Someone spent some serious time and money here, more than I'd actually expected.

This 340 is a balls-out race engine, period. The obvious signs were there, like the oil pump/pickup and the roller cam, which is larger than I thought (look at that lobe!):

Then, on a hunch, I decided I should check out the cam drive. Sure enough, it's got a gear arrangement rather than a chain:

Polished beams on the rods, very nice, then Stretch said, "Hey, what's that?" and pointed at the lifter galley--which is blocked for full-race use with the roller cam:

Manual-trans friendly, of course:

Almost a shame to pull a couple of these caps, but I want to double-check everything:

Here's a few shots of the mega-duty engine stand that dude's employee tossed in for free, because "We've got enough engine stands around here." I'd have paid $100 just for this; the motor just glides over and it rolls like a dream across the floor.

clearly it was painted on that stand too!!!

on that stand..it looks like a match for my engine hoist...something CLEARLY out of the prior to 1960s when you needed to be able to hang monsters off it..i bet that stand weighs a fuckton too

whats the story on the balancer ive not seen one with mutliple marks like that..or if i have i forgot

the oil arangement is a true work of art!!!!!..and gods own bump stick....2 things i wonder..has any of the oiling been masassged and where are the blueprints..cause someone must have went ALL IN!

Actually, the stand isn't too bad weight-wise. But the spindle is machined, as is the bore in which it sits, so the engine just glides over oh so nicely.

Not sure what the deal with the balancer is; I haven't seen one like that myself. It looks like a really well-done modification. The marks go out to 40°BTDC, though, and are accurately marked according to the aftermarket balancer I compared with it. The oiling's been massaged a little, since the RH cam galley is completely blocks. All 16 lifters are splash-oil only, so no more hydraulic cams for this block. It's a required mod for roller lifters; the 3/4" ID oil pickup isn't required but it sure is confidence-inspiring when combined with the baffle hanging off it that perfectly fits the 9-quart Milodon pan.

God's own bumpstick indeed! I just measured it: .415" lift @ the lobe. With my 1.6:1 rockers, that's .664" at the valve. :wtf:

Dude. YOU SUCK.

My 340's a boat anchor with two gaping holes where some cylinder walls should be

Dude. YOU SUCK.
It only appears that way. In reality, I just hand over smallish amounts of money.

Methinks the Valiant is going racing. I really don't need much more to build the car at this point. Stall converter, carb, headers, and... well, not a lot else.

"... it rolls like a dream across the floor."

Whose floor did you find that out on...? :)

The approximately 6' of exactly-as-wide-as-the-stand area I was able to clear to get it in the garage.

:D :D :D
