Project Sno Ball....85 RamCharger

I do have a dual V-belt denso alt unit from some older mopar?...had it for years. Not sure what the Amp rating is on that one?

Most alts have the amp rating stamped on them somewhere, at least they "used to" :doubt:

That's not really the case any longer. Even the classic "squarebacks" have usually been through the reman bin enough times that the marking is no longer relevant. I've seen a number of 63/65A remans in a 37A case, for example. The outer cases can be swapped William Dash Nilly with regards to their internals, which is exactly what happens at a remanufacturer. All the similar cases get thrown into one bin after the windings have been removed.

There is a Chrysler-built alternator from the late '80s (I think it was '87-'89) that produces 120A. It actually looks somewhat like a GM alternator; it's got an external fan and black plastic rear cover. It used 2-groove V-belt pulley. Apparently it's more reliable than the Denso units, which weren't exactly problematic themselves. It's kind of a pricey bastard, though, especially if you're shopping locally.

AC Delco 3342219

However, like any other option, the Chryser 120A will not fit the giant Motorola's brackets. I may be wrong, but I think the big Moto took the dirt nap after '87, so V8 bracketry from any '88 through at least 1990 RWD application should work, including M-bodies from Gran Fury squad through Fifth Avenue and pickup trucks that originally had serpentine belts (even 3.9 Dakotas). Said bracketry would also accomodate the more-common Denso unit.

One nice thing about having a vehicle originally equipped with the Motorola alternator is the anaconda-sized main alternator wire. The wire on my Imperial looks to be at least 8 gauge.

Well since we mostly finished packing, I have had a couple hours the last couple days to work on Sno Ball.

Yesterday I replaced the busted drivers seat.

Old and Busted....

New Hotness...

Can't believe I found a seat that matched exactly...what are the odds!! Pretty happy with it. ;)

Yesterday I also tossed on a new set of headlight surrounds. I was looking for replacements, or repro's for the 81-85 grilles, but there is no units available in teh aftermarket that I could find. Found some used ones, and NOS, but way more then I wanted to spend.

I did find lots of 86-91 units though. Found a pair of brand new units, shipped to my door for under $50! Thought for that price I would make them work...not like Sno Ball is a pristine vehicle.

New 86-91 units....

Had to drill into the grille surround, then use some long screws...turned out OK by my standards.

And today I tore out the old MC and booster...since the booster sucked air from under the dash, and the MC was toast. Well since I have a few left over parts from my hydro boost conversion on Ol' Patches, I figured those would work well on Sno Ball.

Old vs new'er booster and Masters....

I had a lifetime warranty on that NAPA MC...so went down and got a new one.

Installed booster and MC and then used my oh so fancy bleeder set-up....

All done....

Bleed the whole system from front to back...used my fancy water bottle and hose to do it by myself. Took me about 30 min and the brakes work great now!

Always plow in low range. Let the mechanical advantage of the transfer case take the load off of the transmission.

Good advice....Thanks! They used to clear commercial lots with Sno Ball....so my guess time was of the essence...so 4H for plowing. ;)

LMC Truck is now carrying '70s-'93 Dodge truck stuff, including patch panels, body parts, and trim.. I think they'll have the grille and headlight bezels.

cow..you might want to have a peak in the t-case...if they were plowin lots..good chance the chain is stretched...last thing youd want to have happen is have it poppin out of 4 in the dead of winter when you need it plowin

at the very least..keep it in mind for when you do the trans

Yes they are, but still not for the 81-85 grilles. They don't actually manufacture anything for the dodge trucks....at least to my knowledge...but just pull all the parts from other suppliers out there into one place. Some people find it easier to buy stuff that way. ;) Me I hunt the interwebs until I find who actually makes those parts, then who offers them at the best price. :)

Thanks for the advice....I will look into that.

Did a bunch of research last night on the Meyer plow set-up that Sno Ball is sporting. The Pump is a Meyer E-47, and was made for next to forever, and a billion units sold.;) You can buy pretty much everything to build, or rebuild one. Also the actual frame mount system, and plow/blade are Meyer units as well. Again a lot of the parts are still available for the frame mounts, though costly. And the plow/blade parts are readily available.

Once I get it to it's new home, I will definitely be doing a complete service, and rebuild on the entire system.

if memory serves...and its been a while...if you throw it in 4low and then put the front end only in the air or remove the front shaft you can check for chain slop by rootating the front output of the tcase....or..atleast thats how i remember checking for "good" used cases...there may have been something about rotating it till it locks in but i dont remember it all exactly

also..the 1 weak link on these setups being married is the tcase to trans seal..."when" it lets go you pump 90wt back into the trans

I think the transfer case is filled with ATF? It is weeping a bit, and the fluid sure looks like ATF. ;)

if its the full time unit that im pretty sure it is np 203? or was it 205?...castiron BEAST with a chain in it and should be filled with gear oil..or...i coulda swore

i went digging and stand corrected..aperantly you can run atf or gear oil in them...

I do not believe it's a full time transfer case. The big cast iron unit your thinking of is the NP205....and it's a gear driven unit so "most" people run gear oil in them. Pretty sure sno ball has a NP208....it's all aluminum.

i must be thinking the 2o3...when did they switch to an aluminum unit?...my 203 is a chain...ive rebuilt it twice and even have a new spare chain and sprocket set on the shelf for when i eventualy stretch another one out..since i like to do 4low pavement launches
