1967 dart

Rocker bolts, and in rocker shaft bolts? This may be bad, and I'm sure there's a torque spec on them, but I've always used the German torque spec on them.

Glad you found the issue DD2. :)

That kind of sloppiness is the main reason the guy who did the assembly is no longer a friend. :(

So i had some free time tonight and thought i would fire up the car and get her running for the 20 min and see what i have.

Well there is no spark at the spark plug wire. Distributor turns

i have msd 6al box (bought new)
stock ign coil (new two weeks ago)
msd pro billet distributor (unknown)
msd 8.5 wire (new)
and of course new spark plugs

I followed all the wiring with the msd box and it all checks out perfect.
I am starting to think its the distributor.

any ideas what to test or check?

Ok i spent the night digging

I went to look to where i hooked up the small red wire from the msd 6al box
I confirmed i have 12 volts going to the box in crank and run mode

tested the box again tonight and i get a nice spark from the coil to the distributor, but it does not seem to go from the coil through the distributor:confused:

pulled a spark plug to watch the spark but still no spark at the plug when i crank.

...... but it does not seem to go from the coil through the distributor:confused:

Did you put the rotor back on? :shifty:

If you've got spark going to the distr., but not beyond, the only things between the coil wire and spark plug wires is the cap & rotor.

yes the rotor is on. I was checking all the dumb things last night too.

Wondered if the cap was making contact so i was measuring the depth of the cap and the height of the rotor to figure what was missing.
I checked the ohm reading to the magnetic pickup and voltage goes through it (not too sure what i was reading but i did get a reading of .50)

If you're getting coil spark, your pickup is good. Like I said, the spark goes from the coil to the dist. where it is 'distributed' by the rotor thru the cap to the individual wires. The only two components involved are the cap & rotor, new or not, one or the other is bad.

well i gone and figured it out.... but this time by readin[smilie=2:

In the msd manual it said to open the spark gap up to .050... and i left it at .030 not realizing it :shifty:

after i adjusted the spark plug gap I had spark and lots of it :hmmm:

so this it what went on

I would probably not have run it with the enormous vacuum leak at the RH base of the center carb. I don't know if it was just the audio on your camera or if it was actually reproducing sound OK, but there seemed to be a pretty loud whistle on that side of the car. Put your PCV valve in, man!

I don't know what happened with the distributor, but if it's a Pro Billet that doesn't have a vacuum advance I wouldn't have even bothered trying to diagnose it. I would've just replaced it with a factory Mopar vacuum unit. Driving a street car without vacuum advance, well, sucks.

So i was tinkering on the dart last night for an hour and flipped the switch to let her run and get things dialed in alot better. I created hillbilly timing marks on the balancer so i could get a better idea where i was at.

As you were saying Jass i do believe there must be a vacumm leak as i cannot get her to idle down below 2 grand. I am wondering if one of the carbs is not seating right. So I may have to dig a bit deeper on that the next chance i get to tinker.

Well, in the video you have that huge vacuum port on the RH side of the center carb wide open. It's supposed to be connected to the PCV on the LH valve cover.

The pcv was connected the last time i ran the engine (after video)
but i did find one loose bolt to hold the carb down. Somehow my triple checking missed that one bolt which is odd cause i went corner to corner when tightening
