Weird '78 Monaco

Hi all,

I'm in the Birmingham location today, and an interesting mopar got put out on the yard. It's a '78 monaco, which is a b body. Here's the interesting part: It's a 2 door, with a 400 4 bbl and the COP PACKAGE! It has a 9 1/4 rearend (gears and limited slip status unknown), cop wheels, cop hubcaps (they look like regular dog dishes but with holes in them from the factory) and a 140 (or was it 150?) mph speedo. The hubcaps are all perfect as far as I can see. It even has the power steering fluid cooler on it. I plan to get the wheels/hubcaps and the instrument cluster at a minimum. I really can't see why the car is in the junkyard at this point. I guess it could have a bad motor or trans. What else is rare/valuable that I ought to yank?

I would yank the 9.25 if it is a SG too! Maybe the sway bars, if it has rear also....?

If it is a true cop car, the speedo will say "certified" on the front

I'm not sure it's worth it to yank the 9 1/4, even if it does have a suregrip. The reason is that it's not a desireable axle width, and 9 1/4 suregrip units are neither hard to find nor expensive if you look a bit. It's a fairly strong rearend, but they're everywhere, and the axles are c-clip retained at that. Maybe I'm missing something, I dunno...I can see pulling the rear swaybar though. I think I remember that it does have one, too.

I'm not sure, but I think it probably does. I can't imagine the car coming with all that stuff-high reading speedo, rear swaybar, power steering fluid cooler, and not having the cop package.

Update: The speedometer reads to 140, and it does say "certified". I got the cop wheels and poverty caps, as well as the COMPLETE instrument cluster. Not just the gauges, but the board, headlight switch, windshield wiper switch, and the plastic frame that all of it is attached to. It's all basically pristine cosmetically.

The car has a 9 1/4 in it, and whatever gears it may have, it has a right stout limited slip unit. Removing the rear lugnuts with the car in park and jacked up resulted in no suregrip clutch slippage at all. This was with a 1/2" ratchet and a fairly long wrench slipped over the end of that for leverage.

Question: Is a "smog" thermoquad worth grabbing? It has that solenoid at the back of the housing, but I don't know the significance of that. I can easily grab it if it's worth getting.

I tend to grab TQs no matter what they are. They can always be used later for parts if it's an undesirable carb.

----why? 1 for each cop?oh-oh-oh- i know- so if they lock themselves in the trunk they can still find their coffee? :bwuhaha:

There's an extra light near the mirror in front, so they can see what they're doing when they write you a ticket at night. :(

What would that Sure Grip go for? And would it fit say a 78 D100 w/ a 9 1/4 rear?

Possibly with labor & shipping to NJ

The carrier would run about $55 out the door, including tax. You don't want to pay to have someone pull it and ship it, because newer lower mileage ones are available on the internet. I bought one off ebay several years ago for $50 that supposedly was out of a truck with about 6000 miles on it. The unit shows no signs that they were lying.

For general interest, here's our website. The price list is available on there, so you guys can see what I'm talking about when I start getting all wound up about the low prices.
