Hiding In The Bushes While
What you guys got?

I just inherited this '96 Yamaha Big Bear 350 4x4 from my dad who just bought a 2005 Yamaha Kodiak 400.

It's a little rough around the edges but a pretty solid little bike.

I think I need to put clutches in it as it slips out of gear badly in second and occasionally in other gears as well but it runs very strong and uses no oil.

Also need to tend to the front brakes as they don't work but other then that it's just cosmetic. Dad's very first trail ride out with his friends resulted in it tumbling down a hill end over end. :D

It also has 1.5" straight pipe exhaust and a flapper cap for a lawn tractor to keep the rain water out. Installed by yours truly when my younger brother had bought it originally and later sold it to my dad who then gave it to me. :D

It came to me with almost bald 25" tires so I picked up these Carlise ACT 26x8x12 and 26x10x12 tires from my boss at work who took them off his 2008 Can AM 500 for $80 for all four tires.

Nice bike. Nothing now, but I had a Polaris 325 Magnum

I'll get another eventually, and I still have to put a top end on my son's 90 Polaris Scrambler, I burnt it up doing donuts in the back yard :D

Nothing since my XR200R, which I sold several years ago. The Thumper Racing 247cc stroker went into a blown-up CR125R, and I think the rest went to the scrap pile... including a rather-expensive Ohlins piggyback rear shock.

I haven't been on an ATV since the '80s as far as I recall. I think the last one I rode was a Honda ATC250R, but it may have been my friend's Tecate. I owned a 200X at one point (while I had my XR), but I never actually rode it. I bought it and parted it out on eBay even though it ran pretty well. I just never much cared for ATVs, be they 3- or 4-wheelers. Give me a dirt bike every time.

I used to have an '82 Kawasaki KDX175, I got it when I was 16 and sold it when I has 21, I enjoyed it but found I liked the 4 wheelers better.

It's kind of strange, because I have absolutely no use or care for street bikes, but when it comes to off-road, I'll take a 2-wheeler every time. Faster, more maneuverable, better on fuel and can just plain go a lot more places than an ATV. Hell, I've never even really wanted an off-road truck, and the only truck I've ever owned was a 2WD.

ill get some pic's later

as for the 2 vs 4 comment..both have there places..no seriously.....the only thing that will keep a quad out of a place where a bike can go is a pair of BIG rocks..they have the same width (well the older ones anyway) as dictated by the fact they run the same bars!!!...

i should add a lil something tho...ive found that 4x4 quads cant go places a 2wd can...lol ask fishy about that HAHAHAH ..no seriously ive had a 400 bayou out and about and its a lil faster than my 200 but it cant go up and thru half the shit my 200sx can....the ONLY place we found the 4x to be better was deep snow...at the point where the suspension is snow plowing.....the 2x is twice the fun half the weight nimble and driftable..not to mention slings mud better and sails thru the air with alot more grace

I'm not familiar with the ATV's trans construction, but I would think it's similar to a motorcycles. On a bike, jumping out of gear is a sign of worn parts in the trans. (bushings, bearings, washers, shafts or even, in one case a pin that held a shaft in position)

:hmmm:

yeah its likely eitehr a spring or pin or something wrong with the shift select/cage NOT the clutch..."most" quads have identical trans as a bike...the 4x's are closer related to shafty bikes tho

Dippy. Make sure to use a good bike oil in that. The Yahama 350 had cam oiling issues. If you use a good "Bike" oil and dont hold it wide open in high gear for long periods and dont ever quench a hot engine in deep enough water to soak the head you will be fine. Adjust the valve lash and the timeing chain and it will run for a long long time.

My sister was the primary driver when Dad owned it and she used to reach down and shift it my hand and I think she bent a fork.

the only issue..and id ask...is wheres the shift drum?...that is a foot shifted one not a hand lever up on the body right?

It's got a foot shifter down on the left side like a dirt bike.

The stick on the left side is for high range, low range and reverse.

The current inventory...

Is a daily driver still a toy? Short answer. Yes.

I've ridden several different quads and they just don't do it for me, give me a bike anyday.

Also, a quad is not a bike..it's a quad or ATV, never a bike.

I think the point he was making was that bikes, by definition, have two wheels without exception.

Exactly. ;)

I have also owned a boat, otherwise known as a hole in the water which to pour money into....but hey, it was fun after all. Snowmobile? Been there done that to.

Call it a bad habit I guess. :D

I've owned two sleds in my life. '71 Arctic Cat Lynx with a 440 Kawasaki Twin in it and a '78 Arctic Cat Pantera 500 Spirit Fan Cooled Twin.
