Garage work

Stretch

Hey! There’s no easy button for a body like this!
My new place has a 30x40 pole barn with a dirt floor and a 30x32 garage with a concrete slab but no insulation and basically no power. Pretty much just a few lights and a garage door opener. All the power comes from a sub box in the barn and runs through a 15 amp switch in the garage. That just wont do so .....

I installed white steel on the ceilingFor a few reasons.
1) this is a pole barn and weight hanging from the rafters is a concern. Fire code requires 5/8" dry wall at 75# each 4x8 sheet. Add the snow load and nope! Not doing that.
2) steel is fire code.
3) I dont have to paint it!
4) steel is a shit ton lighter than the dry wall.
5) I don't have to paint it!
6) Steel goes up faster!
7) I don't have to paint it! ( I fucking hate painting)!
8) I don't have to paint it!

After the ceiling was in we blew in 75 bags of insulation giving me R30.

Next it was on to the wiring of the building and adding a box.
I also installed a Modine for heat. This weekend I will be digging a trench for tbe conduit ( i have a buddy who hooked me up)! Two runs of conduit 180 ft each. One for 2ot cable for 100 amp service and one for cad6. While the trencher ( thanks to another buddy) I'm going to cut a trench for the gas line.

After the power is done I'll finish the 8 inches of wall insulation and the steel on the walls.

Looks good. Jealous of your spaces. Suggest going with LED lighting, cheap to install and you get a ton of light for little expense to run.

And today the gas line went and and the toy went home.20200920_122524.jpg20200920_122458.jpg

Looking good!

Why didn't you go with an armored teck cable then you wouldn't have to run it inside a casing?

Did you "call before you dig" to make sure you knew where all the existing buried services were? I didn't do that once and nicked the natural gas line....not one of my proudest moments.:censored:

I did call some time ago. Back when I did the excavating down the driveway to remove stumps and make it so the water runs off the drive rather than sitting in it.

We also confirmed by "witching" them.

I used conduit because it was free. The wire was cheeper too because it was not direct burial wire. 225 ft. Of 3&1 2ot is pricey stuff!

I did 150' of armored teck cable for my 100amp service for the shop....think it cost be about $1400!! 😖

It turns out that was the wrong breaker. That one was $150.00. The one I needed was $50.00 so thats kinda nice!

I hope that the wire isn't aluminum wire. It sure looks like it in the pics.
It is. What is your concern? It is in 3" conduit and it is 2 sizes over the required copper for the run and amperage. It also has the corrosion protective compound applied at each connection.

Aluminum wiring was known to overheat and was banned from being used in some parts of Canada. In most home reno programs, they usually replace all aluminum wiring.

i doubt ill have any issues. Like I said. Its 2 sizes larger than the required copper. If I do, I can pull copper and change it out. 3" conduit makes pulling wire a breeze!

Make sure that all of your switches and receptacles are rated for aluminum usage.
