Does anyone know what the cost of living is like down there?

What's it like there?

I've checked the web for weather type info and I know it's inland and closer to the mountains than to the sea.

What would a few acre property (MOPAR storage) with a nice house (wife storage) just outside of town run?

Stay out of the city - I got lost this year coming back from the beach and ended up having to drive through one of the suburbs south of the city - it was bumper to bumper for an hour, and it was Sunday.

I personally always liked the Carolinas. It's woodsy and mouintainy like it is here, except there are jobs.

hey- don;t know about you- but the Deputy likes it up here!!!!!!!

It was was sold new in Durham N.c.!!!

Dave,I used to pass thru there 3-4 times a month, got a cousin lives there,it is the worst traffic I've seen on the east side of the Miss. river, for such a piss ant city,it's worse than Jersey or NYC morning traffic,,at least they pretty much have the loop built around it now,,,It alway's was a dump 'til about 10-15 years back,Banks decided to make it home base, and it took off,a real Wall street type of biz atmosphere, lotsa' modern skyscraper type bldg.'s,like Banks, ins. co.'s,but alot of ghetto downtown,,I think you would like it there,if you commuted from the SC side of the line,,pretty expensive within an hour of the city, but lotsa' nice cheap land on the S.C. side, less a.m. traffic on I-77 south and alot more friendly folks on the SC side,,,taxes, tobacco, gas, beer, whiskey & dancin' girls are all cheaper on the SC side......in the winter it get's cold like here in November, and they get a few snowfalls/year,(it used to be warmer 15-20 years ago),plus they don't get very hot in the summer,at least not hot like a fla. / so.Ga. avg. summer, but quite warmer than you are used to,,,the best memories I have of charlotte, was when I passed thru there I knew it was only 10 hours to home, in fla. It really is a nice area once out of the city, the city is about 17 miles long from N to S. from the SC line to about exit 21 your out of it,E to W is much shorter, coming in from the Ga.,side, but traffic sucks all the way north for a long time, going out of the city at night and coming in in the a.m. is worse,,that's why the SC side is better for commuting.............Got a Job offer or something ?? Grab it,you won't be disappointed, and you only live once!

the other plus is that you can be from charlotte to buffalo/niagra in a 10-12 hour drive,if you needed to get home for something,

Yep. Someone's floating an opportunity in my face.

Not too sure about it.

The money is about the same but in US $'s. That's a plus, but no as much as it used to be.

My Mother was born in the US. That might help in getting a work permit or even dual citizenship.

There's lots of soft benefits that I have now that I would have a hard time giving up. I have to try and put a dollar value to those if it's possible.

Understanding how far a dollar goes down there helps.

I'm kind of in a situation now that is similar to what you described, Chris.
I live way outside of the big town and commute when I have to. I could never afford the house I'm in if it were closer to Toronto.
Now, I get to work from home if I don't have a meeting or customer visit to make.

I kind of already said no to the job, but they're still pursuing me.
I'll keep playing hard to get.

they will be able to get an H1B work visa,as an american corp.,they just have to state that you are a specialized engineer,You won't likely get far on your mother's citizenship,as you are over 21 years old,,,,good luck,,your $$ will go a lot farther in SC,and alot further than here!,I would state in my contract that they are responsible for your family's top notch healthcare ins..., is this a long term or short deal ?

In fact,I wouldn't even negotiate with an american or overseas co.,unless the health care issue was up front, get's pretty pricey if a kid get's hurt,or the wife needs an operation,,,,,,

Sounds to me if they want you that bad insurance probably wont be an issue at all. Best of luck in your decision.

I don't think it's a problem either, just making sure that the plan is a real good one,for full coverage, and no hidden $5k deductible kinda' crap!
