My chones itch...
Heeeeyooooo, just snagged a 70 Dart w/a 318/904, 8 3/4 rearend (WOOHOO) and seemingly minimal rust. I say seemingly..hah, I found out where my trunk was leaking and a little scraping gave me THIS

but really, other than that, and some apparent bondo cracks, the car looks great! Especially for 1900 bucks.

Here are the shots:

For those that don't recognize me from old scatpack.com or other random forums, I used to have a 71 Challenger and sold it back at the end of 2004. Regretted that moment and it's taken me this long to get another oldie but goodie!

One of my roommates in GA ran a '70 Swinger 340 as a daily driver. That car was a freakin' hoot, even though for some reason it had an appetite for clutches. There's something about the look in the eyes of a BMW 7-series owner when you won't allow them to accelerate past you in a primered, battered old Dodge. "Oh, you've got the 5-liter V12? Yeah, I've got you by half a liter of cast-iron, pushrod, carbureted American power!"

One of the reasons I've stuck with old cars is for moments like that. Mr. S-class can't get around your Plymouth... how much is that monthly payment?!

lol Jass, that's spot on. Except I dont expect it to be primered forever...just gotta get that damn stealth outta here so I can pour money in to it! That little 318 will be coming out and a 440 will be going in, which will only be an in between until the 500 is done. I think a 500 stroker will keep me content in smashing those chick cars :P

You would've loved my '72 Charger. It looked like I dragged it out of a swamp after it had been dumped there years earlier following a demolition derby. If you're hounding around the site and see any references to "The Black Bitch", that's my honey. $225 car with a $6,000 motor and trans. That thing was a scream, but she was ill-fated from the get-go. Still, I got 28,000 miles out of her, beating that wreck mercilessly. I still miss her... WP29P2G125715. I got the biggest ticket of my life in that old disaster--146 in a 65. Driving that car in Atlanta traffic was like being the captain of a Coast Guard ice-breaker. They just got the hell out of the way!

I don't have any on this PC, and the ones on the site are in a restricted area you'll eventually be able to see. Trust me, that car was a screaming pile... flat black, no grille, dented and rusty, just wrong all the way around. It even had mismatched wheels for good measure... but the icing on the cake was the dumpster stickers my friend put on it: "CAUTION: DO NOT PLAY ON OR AROUND". Still one of my favorite cars. Trust me, no one ever expected that thing to have a 440 Six Pack, even when I had the bulge hood with the emblems in place. Pop the hood on her in a gas station, and people would mess themselves.

Oh man, that is classic. As soon as I can see those pictures I've got to. My original choice for another mopar was actually between a runner or another challenger (or similar e/b body), but the damned things all cost too much! Where is that deal when I need one? Pulling the 318 outta the Dart soon to realign a cam bearing and HOPEFULLY all goes well. If not, it looks like she's gonna have to sit for a bit longer until I get a 440 long block and trans that I want to toss in. Sigh...I can't wait to start driving it though! So many goodies!

I've got a friend that's got a complete 440, running and driving with a 727, for sale sitting in a '76 motorhome. Normal heads and manifolding, not the crazy stuff you see on 413-3s and stuff. She'd let it go pretty inexpensively at this point; the rest of the motorhome is essentially junk. Swing on over with a Sawzall and a pack of demolition blades, and we'll have a merry old time carving that bad boy out of it! Not too many better ways to spend an afternoon while still wearing your pants...

If the cam bearings give you trouble just pick up another 318...can still be had for dirt cheap. Then at least you can run it around a while while you source up the parts for the motor swap.

Personally I'd keep the A-body with a small block screamer. A stroked out 360 will give you better handling and control, and will still run like a raped ape. But that's just my preference.

I no longer believe in stroker engines, unless you're going whole-hog with enormous heads (stock port window/rocker locations won't cut it) and intake, large by huge exhaust, etc. I haven't seen many 408s than can keep up with my friend's 340. Come to think of it, not many big-blocks around here can. A pump gas, factory headed, dual-plane intake, street-driven car that's knocking on the 10s (best time of 11.03 so far). It's a stock stroke, just .030" overbore, with ported J heads. All steel except for the hood, and tips the scales around 3,500lbs.

How many of your friends with 408s are cranking those numbers in a car they can drive to work?

Just drive on over? Lol rarely do people I talk to on these boards even live within 500 miles. I'm still out in CA. And thrash, I thought about finding another 318 if the motor needs disassembled. They do seem to be plentiful. If I can score one cheap enough, that is exactly what I'm going to do, but if it is going to cost a little less than a 440 and I am able to sell my other car, I think I might as well just get the 440. And I want a 500 because I want a 500, dammit :P never had a stroker and there's just something about putting one in an a body that I have always wanted to do. Plenty of time to build a small block later some time. :D

Speaking of... How are those a833's with overdrive? I wouldnt think passon would build them if they couldn't handle power. You guys know any specific goods and bads?

A Dart with a shave job. Sweet. :)
Those are typical rust places on an A body, shouldn't be much to worry about.

Wecome to the House.

The weak point on the stock A833OD is the floating countershaft, but it can be made solid with bushings. Mopar Muscle did an article on it a couple of years back. Then again, I know of at least one that's been trouble-free in a '67 Hemi Coronet for decades.

Hmm...well I might have a buddy out in TN that has one...I hope hahah. Seems like a built one would cost me half of what keisler wants.

dude your dart looks exactly like what i'mabout to do to the cuda! I'm in the process of gutting the interrior to bare metal everything, putting an orange rollcage in, and flat blacking the outside. I was starting to restore her, but I stopped that noise. It's funny how joining a carclub can get your priorities all out of wack lol. I'm going back to my street racing roots with the looks lol

hahah the black is cool, but I will be going gloss black w/a flat black bumble bee stripe. And yes...damn the peer pressure...it always makes you spend the money for good times :D

Thanks man. Somebody needs to stop me...i haven't even sold the stealth and have already bought a ton of crap. Just saw the 833 w/overdrive for sale on fabo and it's in my neighborhood. Price is difficult to pass up, but I would need EVERYTHING to convert to a manual car. AGH!

You might want to contact Stretch. He got most of an A-body pedal setup from me several years back, but at it turns out the car he's looking at is already a stick so he may be willing to come off it. I don't think the countershaft or fork pushrod were there, nor was there a floor tunnel, but that still gets you most of the way there.

No promises, just a suggestion. If he's willing to come off the stuff, he's about as straight a shooter as you'll ever find. Total stand-up guy... and when he stands up, you'll probably be looking up at him. :D :D :D
