Total impulse buy..

I saw an ad for a mini flying V at the XS Cargo place, and I thought it would be a total hoot to have kicking around - maybe even handy as a traveller. For $50, why the heck not?

They were all sold out, but I took one of these of the rack and was totally surprised at how well it played.

It's by no means anything that will stay in it's current setup, but for $100, it plays and sounds pretty good. It has the LP atttack and sustain that I've missed for too many years.

If I ever want to mod it or tweak it, I won't hesitate. That alone is worth the price of admission. The fact that I can play it out of the box with only one spot that buzzes is a bonus. It should easily set up fine with a normal first setup by a tech (or me )

I will put new strings on it soon, though. They are crappy but work for now.

Went back and got the mini-V that Iwent for in the first place..

It's fun, but it's WAY off as far as intonation and it won't stay in tune worth a damn.

That just means I gotta work on it, and well, that was the point of getting these...

Nice axes! Really getting back into Les Pauls again. That V looks kinda small to me....or is it just the pic that makes it look that way. Would love to have an old Gibson V! :2thumbs:

Is it really as hard as it looks?

I find that I can play lots of things, but I can't really play a song - because I don't have the theoretical background.

For me, that's the most frustrating part. I need to know the "formula", the logic, the math behind the music before I'll ever be able to be good.

The best example that I can give is when I learned the pattern to the pentatonic scale. I just jammed on that pattern forever and now I sound like I know what I'm doing. But ask me to through the structure of a song around that and I'm toast. And don't start playing a nother instrument or you'll throw me off.

The pattern was easy for me to learn. Playing it so it sounds like something came naturally over time.

i dont have have a v but i was going thru liquadation world and they had a small electric .. it is the starter series and they have small drums and other stuff. i bought it for my granddaughter. i try to keep in tune to and i get real frustrated with it. but it will hold for a song or 2. i got a cheap amp to. it works . its good if i want to a little tune tune or 3.......i try.

The mini-V came with a little bitty amp as well. Nothing great but you can carry it over shoulder using the included strap and run it off a 9-volt battery.
My wife loves it when I wonder upstairs with it cranked. :nanatar:

Actually, the Mini-V is a great deal.

For $50, how can I argue?

It IS a bugger to tune though. I still haven't got it right.

I think the first mod will be a new bridge - this one doesn't really tune - you can change the overal angle, but not for each string.

When you called it a "Mini" V, I kept picturing it as being about the size of onna dem uka-lay-lees (sp?).

Careful. The general consensus on pawn shops and guitars are that they are not a good match. Most don't know what they're doing and price their guitars out of sight of the real value.
Bottom line: you need to really know what you're looking at and really know your prices in order to know if you're getting a good deal or not.
