Rusty's not very quiet cuda progress

looking for the meguiars final detail & could only find final inspection & last touch, would one of those be it?
"Detailer" & "Inspection" I think are the same things by different names. I've been using both for many years. I don't wash my cars. Water & detergent do not touch my cars. And the paint on my convert is over 30 yrs old. It's fantastic stuff. Removes road dirt, dust, bird shit and any other common things that cars collect. With 3 cars I buy it by the gallon. Just spray on, let set for 30 sec to a minute, wipe & a quick buff with a soft towel. Faster than washing.

mixed day on the car, started with the door panel, that went pretty well, couple of my repairs didn't hold, but I can live with it.
Split at the top opened right up, the on around the top screw seems to be holding?20240227_120025.jpg
front end, no one should ever see this, as soon as I started to tighten the screw she gave out.20240227_120043.jpg
Considering what they looked like when I removed them I'm at least a step up!20240227_120112.jpg
So I moved on to the other side, tested my surgically altered door pull & it will be ok but the chip does show20240227_121301.jpg
locking door hides it! 20240227_121254.jpg
So now it goes bad, before I can put the plastic on I have to install the mirror to get the remote cable through the door, pulled em out only to find the paint ruined, had them wrapped in a nice soft clean towel rag, must have done it too soon20240227_130436.jpg
Got those repainted AGAIN, but now I have to wait a few days before I dare to put them on. so drivers door is also on hold. 20240227_145307.jpg
To add insult to injury I can't find the chrome bezels that hold the cable to the door panel!

On a better note I hit the C pillar with some 600, seemed to be staying in clear, so I took down the worst with 400, a little more 600. Just have to hope there's enough to wet sand a few rounds to get me to 200020240227_123109.jpg20240227_123057.jpg
So on this rather nice day I may have gotten an hour or so outside, the rest wasted in the garage!
Some day my luck will change.

I'm not sure if I know what you're trying to find. If by "bezel" you mean the chrome remote nut on the inside of the door panel it's part number 6027749:

MirNut.jpg

If you're referring to the retaining washer as a "backing plate" you want part number 2945603:

MirWasher.jpg

There are plenty of both on ye 'Bay. The nuts are extremely overpriced, considering they're the same ones used on seven years' worth of A-bodies. The washers are around $10 shipped... still too much, but at least it's new.

classic had the chrome for 21, Ebay 25 & up, yes I need the retainer too, I'll try a part # search next time, the retainers didn't show up in a remote hardware search!
thanks again!

OK another 40 bucks out the window, Now I know mine will magically reappear!
not that terrible11.09 & 27.08 shipped & taxed!

So today was paint the kiddies pine box cars, I have to add some racing stripes to complete the color work.
I'm actually thinking of mixing up some clear from the car to really make them dazzle!
I gave them some 600 paper to sand a while for something they could actually do.

Devils emblem came out ok, just lost the thin circle where the wood curved away, not going to attempt that by hand. 20240303_162306.jpg
But such a beautiful day couldn't be totally wasted, so I cleand out the threads on the mirror mounts & got those on.
Struggled getting the remote through the hole had to scrape off about all the pant to angle it enough to fit between that framing inside whew! 20240303_142528.jpg
The "look" won't be complete till I get the black hocky stripe on the back, hunting one down with 360 instead of 340 callouts will be fun. 20240303_142506.jpg

Now once the mirror hardware gets here I can do the door panel.

So I did a little search for the stripe, turns out the 360 callout isn't a problem.
Found

Performance car graphics matt or gloss black 129.
vinyl

Ebay, challenger gary stripes & graphics
54.99 matt black, he does not mention material?

Josh's muscle car parts
71.99
tape vinyl matte black

Year one was 99 but no custom 360's, only standard hocky #'s.

Anyone deal with any of these, where would you buy?

pretty sure matte black is what I want.

Year One got their stripes from Dale's Cuda Shop (DCS) for decades. They probably still do but I can't verify that. Regardless of what Year One offers, DCS may make 360 versions (I don't know). DCS sells on eBay, one of their usernames is quicksilverdiecast or something similar. Performance Car Graphics has been around forever and has a good reputation. Both of those vendors make their stripes in-house and use 3M vinyl, which is of course more expensive--and well worth it. The other two are unknowns to me. I've seen Josh's site but know nothing about the business other than they're reseller rather than a manufacturer. I've never heard of Challenger Gary but at that price I doubt he's using 3M material. I'd question Josh's number as well in terms of quality.

Both Dale and David (the guy who started and ran PCG) were sticklers for quality. Both have passed, Dale quite some time ago. Dale's brother apparently took over the DCS but isn't much of a car guy (or even pleasant, I'm told) so I don't know if they're still using top-shelf material. PCG still is.

Good idea. Check and see if they offer stripe application gel/liquid and a squeegee, while you're ordering. Yes, there are other ways, but the specific stuff makes it a bit easier. Usually stripes have some sort of "keys" to align to certain parts of the car, like the top or rear of the quarter panel and the door jamb. The backing paper may be cut as a template. Either way, follow those closely. Read the instructions, if included. If your doors aren't final-aligned, don't put the stripes on until they are. The hockey-stick goes onto the door, so if you adjust the door later, the stripe sections won't align. Lay the whole stripe down at once, don't try to do the quarter-panel section separately from the door, or the lettering at a different time. They're laid out on the backing paper to go on all at once.

The best advice I can give you? Give yourself plenty of time--a couple of hours--and take all of it. Don't get impatient or try to rush it, and don't attempt it in cool/cold weather. Make sure the stripes are positioned correctly before you start squeezing out the gel or liquid. Once those stripes are down, there's no second chance. If you try to remove or reposition any part of it, you will destroy it.

All that being said, my buddy did a full set of AAR stripes in his driveway when he was 20 and nailed it. It's not particularly difficult, but patience is key.

ordered the strip kit, didn't know about the gel, one co mentioned a squeegee not sure if it was this one, I'll see what comes, I can order what's missing, there's no rush, really warm weather is a ways off yet.
Thanks

the proper stripe would have hidden a bunch more of my defects, but I never liked that one.

You can get away with dish soap and water if you don't have the specific stripe goo. When my buddy did his AAR stripes he used a 3M 05517 black rubber squeegee, which is pretty common parts-store fare.

No, I did not remember the exact part number after 33 years. I knew what I sold him and looked it up again. 😁

I can't argue that. I do like the '72 stripe, but the '73-'74 one is a bit overbearing and busy.

The same guy mentioned above went through the same dilemma as you (with the same-year 'Cuda, no less), so I suggested the AAR stripe. He argued that he'd never hear the end of "passing off" a '74 as an AAR, which I'd already considered: "Cut the AAR logos off." That's exactly what he ended up doing, and the stripe actually looked really good despite the blank areas at the back of the quarters (there's already one there on the AAR). I'd also suggested he have a sign or decal shop make "340" decals to match the "CUDA" lettering (to use up that blank real estate), but he crashed the car before he had the chance.

Here's a badly-done Photochop of what it looks like. Freddy's car was Plum Crazy, but since yours is blue that's what I used:

That I could live with, it would hide where the leaf fell on my drivers fender, hocky stripe it is for now, if I F that up royally, I could try that & really complicate or elongate matters!

To my eyes, the AAR stripe is the best thing they ever put on a 'Cuda. I like the hockey sticks and billboards, but the billboards really only work on a '71 for whatever reason.

Anyone else having site issues on a PC? Three different machines, four different browsers. It took a lot of time and trickery to figure out how to post this...

How the heck were you guys even getting in? LOL!
I couldn't.

Should be good now.
I've turfed almost everything in my account except for the forums and my old niagaramopars web site.
The other (Wordpress-based) stuff was wreaking havoc on my hosting account.

Finished off the derby cars today, proud of myself, a major step up from my first one last year, paint over rough wood.
got the black one to exactly 5 ouncces & the other to 4.8 but he's in the sibling catagory.
