WOOHOO!!!

That's why fuel-pressure regulators are not as simple as a fixed orifice.

It sounds to me like you're getting PowerStroked.

I'm getting something, and it isn't pleasant. Now they say they aren't sure the fuel pump was bad. I'm so eff'n pissed right now I can't see straight. I'm not blaming the truck, parts fail, but I could have thrown parts at it at home until something fixed it. I sent it there because they're SUPPOSED to be the professionals!!!

This is why I never, ever tell people to go to the dealership. Pay for the diagnosis at a qualified diesel shop, then tell the dealer what's wrong if you're under warranty. If you're not under warranty, don't even let the dealer touch it. Most times, they just throw their hands up and throw parts at it until it's fixed and you're in the poorhouse.

Man, if I had a nickel for every time I heard that!
We used to spend a huge amount of time fixing other people's fuck-ups, people that were supposed to be the pros.

In fact, my wife sent her Volvo away to a guy who was (at the time) a trusted professional, for some oil leaks.
$4100 later, she got her car back from a real pro who fixed the first guy's MAJOR fuck-ups.

Coincidently, the real pro works at a dealership. :)

Just for clarification, I was referring only to diesel pickups with engine issues. Around here, the techs know painfully little if anything about diesels.

I got it back, with a new pump that I did NOT pay for, running like crap because the jake-leg they had working on it didn't test drive it. I'll run it tonight after dinner when it's a little dark because she's smoking like a freight train right now. I can't wait for the customer satisfaction survey to get here :D

Found out why it was running like crap, numbnuts left the intercooler tube clamp loose.

It scoots along pretty good now... and it's sitting in the front yard with a FOR SALE sign in the windshield.

I actually spent a long time on the phone with Jesse (yes, that one) yesterday. He's got a '96 Chevy 2500 with a 6.5L and (surprise!) two cracked heads. He wanted my opinion on changing his truck over to a gas engine temporarily while he saves up to do a Cummins 12V conversion. I told him if he needs a work truck, find an old beat-up half-ton, beef up the rear springs (he's a logger), and drive it. It'll be cheaper in the long run. Of course, he had to argue with me on that point. I don't think I got anywhere with him, and I told him no, I don't know anyone with a fresh small-block that he could drop into his truck. The truck's in nice shape, and he really likes it. Before the heads cracked, he rebuilt the transmission, the front suspension, the brakes, and a bunch of small stuff so he doesn't just want to junk it or try and sell it with a bad engine. I also questioned whether his newly-rebuilt 4L80E would bolt to a gas engine, but he says that it will... I think he's wrong, but I don't care enough to research it. Even if it would, I told him, you'll need a standalone controller and possibly a new governor to adjust the shift points for the gas engine.

Why do people call and ask you questions like this, and then argue every single point you make about why it's a stupid idea?!

Umm..... It's Jesse.

I'm sure it has more to do with he's trying to talk himself into it being a good idea. Sounds to me like that truck is about to take a left turn down the same road his GS did.

Yeah, we talked about that car too. It's pretty bad when you have to smile and nod into the telephone, but he was trying to tell me all sorts of stuff about that car that I knew wasn't true. He about fainted when I told him how much the guy to whom he traded it got when it sold. That car was rare.

He also told me that he single-handedly changed the clutch in my Trans Am. I don't think he ever even rode in it; no way would I have let him work on it after what happened with the GS. He certainly doesn't have the mechanical aptitude to swap a gas engine into his truck, then swap back and pull off a 12V Cummins swap at the same time. The dude reads too many magazines and online articles: "Guys do it all the time! It's simple!" Well, yes, but those guys actually know what they're doing. :D

AAARRRGG!!! I want this truck outta my life!!!

I found the replacement, here, he can't give me what I need for my truck and at that point I'm almost giving it away. As much as I loathe payments I'm getting some but they're going to be under $300 for 48 months. This one will have to stay around for at least a year after payments are gone, but I can live with it :D

It's coming into focus!
Thursday I get my "triple nickel" Cummins. :) Is an '03, QC, 2wd, short bed, 5.9, 6spd. It's maroon Laramie with black leather. It has a few small blemishes, yellowed headlights, console lid needs to be recovered, and a thorough cleaning and buff.
