Usually, when one buys a "playtime" car, one of two things that happens:
  • 1) You set your mind on a particular model, and seek one out until you find a suitable example;

    2) You come across a nice example of a car at the right price, and though it may not be your dream car, you can't pass it up.
In my case, it was certainly Option 2; though I really do like my LeBaron an awful lot, I wasn't out trying to find an M-car coupe (a friend of mine was, though :D ). I saw it on the side of the road for the better part of a year, figuring one that solid and clean would command a relatively-hefty price tag, compared to what I would pay. As it turned out, the price was low, and I got it even lower, and I took it home.

So, what happened with you? Did you seek out the model you have, or did it fall into your lap?

NOTE: Jedimaster, I will leave the bloody pulp that once was MoPar Jamie and walk to Canada from Kansas if you tell me you specifically wanted to build a truck out of an Acclaim, and went after one with that in mind... and I'm bringing my sticky red Slant Six cam. :D

Already had a '74 Runner back in 1987 when a co-worker wanted to know if I wanted his '73. He was asking $700.00 and I said...."ah, what the he11!". '72 Dart I recently obtained was given to me. Car was abandoned and guy wanted it off of his property. However I have my eye on a certain '73 440 Petty Blue Road Runner with a pistol grip [smilie=e:

A friend Al told me about the Duster and asked me if i wanted it;, I said yes. And I wasn't even looking for a Mopar but I've always wanted one. He doesn't like Mopars except for the Cuda. He's a chebby and furd man. He used to really be into Mustangs!

Dave!

i looked for over a year for a 1971 GTX & Road Runner 440 6 pistol grip 4spd . god only know how many auto i passed on .

then started looking at the 72-74 s RRs auto or 4spd but no COLUM shift cars !!!!!! but it had to be a 440 car .

so i called about the RR , i asked the guy what kind of auto it was colum or floor . he said colum . i told him i wasnt iterested at all .

talked to him severel months latter he said he still had the RR & i was the only guy who called aboot it , told me if i was even remotly interested he would give me a hell of a deal . he even trailered it from MEDINA OH . to here for me to look at . well the rest is history i fell inluv with it . still not to happy about the colum shift . but that may change .

Was looking for a 69 runner or 68/69 Coronet,
heard about my Coronet that it was for sale
in a magazine, bought the magazine, looked at the pic
in the ad and passed on it.

continue my search (kept the magazine tho) found nothing,
but looked in the magazine every day and became much and much more interrested in the Coronet every time i read the ad and looked at the pic.

so i finally went to see the Coronet..made a testdrive
and i was hooked ! [smilie=e:

I was driving a rust bucket 71 Satellite Sebring and a co-worker mentioned seeing a car like mine for sale along the road. Went to look at it that night and brought it home 2 days later. [smilie=e:

I WAS looking for a nicer example of a 71 and the price was right. [smilie=e:

I was actually looking for a 67-69 Dart, but Gina said money would only be spent on a 4-speed 1970 b-body. So I ended up with my pile. Same with the Duster, our kid got interested in them, so the wife laid out the ultimatum to find a cheap 70-up Duster or Demon. I hope Dani enjoys her inheritance. I know I'm going to, once I get it assembled. :D

I sure wish I'd have bought Sammy's bro's root beer Dart last month, and I kick myself everytime I think of it. But, I've only got garage space for 2 cars.

I set out looking for a 69 Charger.

I've never ever seen one around town and only remember seeing one going down the highway on a day that there weren't any shows going on..

I searched the Internet high and low and finally figured eBay was the way to get what I could afford..

I actually looked for ads with no pictures, figuring they would get less attention. I found a few that were within my range of $$$ and skillset to finish and bid, but if bidding got higher than I set my price at, I'd just let it go and not think about it.

Finally, I found one that seemed to be the right one. Got some more pictures from the seller. Talked with him a few times and then bid and won.

All in all, I think I did okay. The car actually cost me $1000, even though the eBay transaction was for 5100. There was over 4200 in new parts and service included. This is stuff I would have had to buy to finish the car anyway, so I consider it a wash.

Now that I'm having the metalwork done, I'm thinking I could have done better fro my money. But now, I've elevated my project from "just a restoration" to "saving one from the crusher."

I would do it again, but I would probablt spend a little more up front to get a more solid car to start with...

I wasn't looking for a car but my 72 charger se had just got totaled. The duster was Mr340's but he wasn't using it so i bought it ( i'm not a big a body fan). I got it for a good price. Still looking to replace the charger with a big block one this time.

I fit into both catagories. Back in the early 70's I was doing a lot of buying & selling. I would buy low, do some simple improvements and sell for profit. I was working with a local dealer and one day a week we would go to the Milwaukee Auto Pool and place bids on cars. I put a bid of $356 on the R/T and won. It was rough for its' age. (6 yrs old) It had been painted Earl Scheib black and the seats were cracked. I stripped the whole car and repainted it, redid the seats and give it a good tune-up. Then I tried to give-it-away for $1000. But being in the 1st oil embargo no one wanted gas guzzlers. So I decided to drive it myself for the next 6 yrs. Then came a house, marriage, divorce, parties, live-ins, marriage, kids, divorce. After paying off the house and divorce lawyers I decided to redo the R/T. That was 9 yrs ago.

During the course of the past 15 yrs I had developed an appreciation for station wagons and at the same time a hatred for ricers and mudstains. The only logical solution was to build a sleeper waGOON. I searched for about 2 yrs for a suitable body until I found this one on epay. It had an opening bid of $600. I sent the seller an e-mail and ask if he would end the auction if I made him an offer he couldn't refuse. He ask for my offer, ($1200) and accepted. To make the rest of the story short, I screwed up the 360 that was in it, Dr. J found me a rusty pickle :D to use as a donor car for the transplant.

Damn, both, a couple a times, most recently cuda # one I searched out, too bad I found it! Texas cuda kinda couldn't pass on it! [smilie=e: Rich.

I was looking for a big block 4 speed '66 or '67 charger and I wasn?t having much luck. I noticed a buddy of mine was working late one night so I stopped in to see if he was going to be off the clock soon and if he wanted to go get a beer. He walked of to his tool box and handed me a picture of his 73 charger and asked if I knew anyone that would like to by it. I asked him whose it was and he said it was his and it was in his dad's buddy's barn in at town abut 90 miles away. The next Saturday John and I went to his home town and I drove my charger home.

I had been looking for the ?66 or ?67 charger for years and hadn?t found anything worth buying and about 3 months after buying my charger I found 2 '67 chargers, both were 440 4 speed cars one was ice blue and the other was black on black. I would have bought either of them but I already had my car and I will never find a car as original as this one. That is why I bought it and I will never regret it.

actualy was looking for my first car..and wasnt entirely shure what i wanted(15)..mom was going to foot the bill for 1500$..mind you she had been in a wheel chair for 2 years at this point we me being ALOT of her care(still am)..so it wasnt like i didnt earn it
had a look at a 69 firebird 400 hood tach..couldnt get ahold of the seller...67 vw bus(bondo bucket was an understatement) sound setup to kill for..ford mustang of unknown year....then the 69 1/2 went out to look even tho it was 1600..but OMG moms BF at the time test drove it(with the e brake on not knowing) Tons of power loud and totaly obnoctious...owner said i had to test drive it...pop off the ebrak and leave a block and a half of rubber.....i was hooked....then was told its long story of 15 owners or so of to many tickets and being sold alot befor he found it under a tree on a farm in wash state

I was looking for a Challenger of any year and I found the purple car on ebay. Turns out it was about 4 miles from my house. :D Drove down there later that afternoon and looked the car over really well inside and out. The next day it was sitting in my garage next to the 64 Galaxie 500XL that I had sold on ebay to buy the Challenger. Drove the Ford to the shipping yard, dropped it off and went home to start working on the car I really wanted.

This is the 3rd Challenger I've had, and not the last I'm sure.

Our first "born" was the 67 Belv 4dr a friend told us about, went and looked at it and bought it for 900.00. The 2nd was the 66 Satellite 383, we searched swappers and found it in the Detroit area, just brought up from Florida, drove it and had to have it. The 67 Belv 2-door, we were on vacation on our mortorcycle in Kentucky and rode past a small private dealer and spotted it and 2 other Mo's, whipped that bike around and test drove the car, it has the same silver special interior (and a vinyl top) as our 4-door has. We picked it up the next morning and I followed hubby with the car, and finished our trip to Tennesee, took the car on rainy days. That was a cool trip!
