what is the longest rock / metal song ? album version , not live hell the list could

rav440

gathering parts like a squirrel gathering NUTS
i"ll name mine in a bit , i just want to see what you guys come up with . and as far as i"m concered PART 1 PART 2 & PART 3 dont count those are 2-3 different songs IE: RUSH STUFF

Well, it can be argued that RUSH's 2112 is one song divided into chapters and when you listen to the whole album side, the music doesn't actually stop.

But, to play along, the next one that comes to mind is Inna-Godda-Da-Vida by Iron Butterfly at just over 17 minutes long.

"2112
  • I. "Overture" – 4:33 (0:00 - 4:33)
  • II. "The Temples of Syrinx" – 2:12 (4:33 - 6:45)
  • III. "Discovery" (music: Lifeson) – 3:29 (6:45 - 10:14)
  • IV. "Presentation" (music: Lifeson) – 3:42 (10:14 - 13:56)
  • V. "Oracle: The Dream" – 2:00 (13:56 - 15:56)
  • VI. "Soliloquy" – 2:21 (15:56 - 18:17)
  • VII. "Grand Finale" – 2:17 (18:17 - 20:34)"

Yeah I would agree, the first that comes to mind is Iron Butterfly. It's rumoured that song was actually supposed to be called "In the Garden of Eden" but they were so strung out that Inna-gotta-da-vida was the end result.

well , its about 9 mins off of the song that i came up with .

I would assume something by Pink floyd would have to be close to the top of this list, although nothing comes to mind at the moment.

Echoes is over 23 minutes.

Good one.

I had though of Floyd, but thought that Wish You Were Here was their longest song...

A quick interwebs search puked out this gem: Thick As Brick, Jethro Tull 43:28 ( not being a huge Tull fan I did not look further into this to see if it was a live or studio set)

I know Dream Theater has some seriously long songs. I couldn't tell you track titles or length though, since I don't like the band.

Absolutely love Dream Theater.

Killer Composition, musicianship, actual vocal ability.....what's not to love? It's like a modern day Deep Purple.

Metal with some Thought behind it....not just the typical thud and gronk thrown together by so many current bands...

They'd be a great band in my opinion if they got rid of the synthesizer crap. That's the main reason I can't listen to them.

Keyboards just add another dimension to rock music.

Like anything else, they can be overdone, or used as a crutch to prop up a bad song. (Think 1980's arena pop bands like Loverboy.) But when songs are arranged well, the use of keyboards (or horns, or strings or flute or whatever) can make a song much more interesting.

Just depends on the talent and skill of the people crafting the music.

I agree with that but, in my opinion DT just goes overboard with it. Then again, I'm not a fan of most music from the 80's either. :D

To my knowledge, the longest "true" modern metal track is "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Iron Maiden at 13:42.
