What ever happened to

EEEEEEEKKKKK! it's a
All those custom vans from the 70's? I came across a bunch of pics my mom took at a car show from 1976 and the majority of the show was the custom vans. (for you young en's, a 70 Cuda was an un-wanted used car then)There were vans with fountains, fish tanks, chandeliers and all with funky shag carpet. I haven't seen or thought about those in years. Wonder where they're at?

I think most have disappeared into rust. The last customized van I saw was in 01, and the glue holding the shag to the walls was also holding the van together, as the rust was above the wheels. The guy was still towing his 70 bee to the track with it. That's it. They went away due to rust........and shame. Mostly rust.[smilie=f:

I've seen two vans lately, that could have been called customs back in the 70's, (nothing by Hot rod, vannin, them others standards) looked like they were squirreled away in a barn after they were not cool. I imagined the kids now were using them to "party" in instead of driving around when gas was 4 bucks.

I have an '88 GMC shorty van with blue velvet/velour interior sitting in the driveway. Always wanted to make a boogy van out of it...

Maybe I will, it looks pretty cool.

yeah really, that's always been on my list of automotive things to do. and it's gotta have an air-brushed mural.

lowriders replaced then...seriously look at the lowrider culture

shag carpet killed the vans..nuff said

that said tho..

there IS 1 or 2 still running around town...1 with dogs playing poker murals on it..the other sunsets..both mopars....the 3rd ive not seen the inside but it SCREAMS 70s van to me..with the front air damn roof wing sun roof ZERO extra WINDOWS except the back door whish is wearing louvers full ground FX kit sitting on white letters and turbines with a set of lake pipes..aghain its a mopar

There's a guy here locally who found a factory dodge "StreetVan" with some minor mods to it from the 70's and 80's, but other wise it's fairly original.

i think the B5 one running around here might be a factory 74? "street van"..i know its most definatly an EARLY 70 body its got the sexy metal grill

They are still around, hidden away in garages mostly. One of the locals that was big into the van craze in it's heyday recently finished up his latest creation. A mid eightys E-150 but you couldn't recognise as such due to all the extensive body mods. Chopped, sectioned, frenched, molded and formed to his liking. My favorite part is the sky roof grafted on from a late 60's Olds wagon, way cool. The whole thing including the wheels has a custom dark blue marble paint job (think bowling ball)...a little wierd for my taste but neat just the same.

A few blocks from my house sit's the "Garfield Van" that hit all the area shows back in the day. Now it sits in a garage collecting dust.

Not sure what year the StreetVan is here locally but it's a factory black (TX9) unit...he's at the local shows I'll have to talk to him some time.

Vanning is a big-time fad in Japan; [smilie=2:

yeah the japvans are ..well....art and anime crossed with "concept cars"...some of em are pretty cool tho

Boothead, those cards were to cool. I'll see if mom will let me take some of those old pics and scan them.
I was talking to one of the guys here that was big into it. he kinda just chuckled and said that company's started building conversion vans, and then came mini vans. that between the two, the cool factor faded away. His last van "broke down" and he left it sit. Thought he would get to it and fix it. Said about 10 years ago he finally had it towed out of his back yard. I remember it had a bed, CB's, a crazy mural and wild side bubble windows.

i hear disco music mixed with porn..and like it!...not my colors but i LIKE IT.....i have visions of going "street van" with my 69 a-108 but odds are ill sell it

there werw a few here to one had a mural on it from star wars. the guy who had it was a painter and did all his own work. it was a good billboard for his work - he did ok. the others were good to. i think what stopped the craze was when the body work needed to be done. ya cant weld. when you have stuff on the walls. when the body goes yer all done. no-one wants to spend another 5-10 grand to get things all done on a van that goes from factory to maybe 10 years old. they look sick when the start to wrought and you cant get a bodyjob and the mural is getting fried at the fenders, just doesnt cut it anymore. some of them up here were just beautiful and great at the drivein . butthat is a different story. :bwuhaha::bwuhaha::bwuhaha:
