True One Owner 72 Roadrunner

Nice car, and I'm working on getting your avatar to work. :D

Correction, I fixed what was broken causing the avatar problem. Go ahead and upload it again, it should work now.

Doing some major painting. Entire front end, to include the new engine "home". Also transmission tunnel back to the cross member. Underside of hood, door frames, and door edges. Hood and door hinges too.

Clean, sandblast, grind, sand, prime (DuPont VeriPrime) base coat and clear coat on all of this.

Body work is minimal, very minimal. Only one place that had rusted through and that was on front end of right rocker panel where front fenders were installed with no clearence, hence water, crud, dirt and the like go trapped.

Here's a sequence of four pictures to show what it progressed from to it's current state!

Last post for a while...mercifully.

All the painting was done in my garage. Built two paint booths. (have a 30x35 garage with 12 foot ceilings)

One around lift with car on it, and one smaller one for hood, doors and hinges.

Used DuPont base/clear coat system. And DuPont VeriPrime primer. About 20 hours of prep, maybe an hour of spraying. Used HVLP gun from Home Depot. This was the first automotive painting I'd ever done. Took my time, was careful, especially in cleanliness and mixing paint. Use liberal amounts of sanding, and prep sol before spraying. Had a few areas where new paint reacted with old but nothing major.

Oh yeah, in case anybody's interested, a quart of base coat, plus the thinner, a quart of clear coat, plus the activator is $122.00 give or take a buck or two! So far on fourth quart. Plus three quarts of VeriPrime and activator at $45 each! Gahhh...where's Earl Schribe when you need him.....
Didn't do the rotisserie thing as I just don't have the facilities available so this was next best. In reality this is a restoration to street drivable condition, not concorse show stuff. I want to drive this car! Be seen in this car! Cruise the local Sonic Drive In in this car. Not haul it around in a trailer!

Learned a lot in what I've done so far. Have the trunk lid, the trunk, the front and rear valences to do, plus the frame/body behind the rear bumper and the inside of the fenders.

Planning on having the outside done professionally as I don't have a big enough and clean enough paint booth. But as I go along I may change that.

I've done the bottoms of the rocker panels and lower frame back to and including the crossmember.

Biggest task remaining is stripping the Ziebart undercoating off the inside of the rear wheel wells and frame. Nasty, dirty, hot, lousy, time consuming work! But since this is my "baby" and I'm retired, I don't mind

Well so much for the update.

Off to the Indy 500, then Texas Motor Speeway, and back to Indy for the USGP. So no work on the Roadrunner for a month!

Will post more later....

PS Is this a disgusting picture or what? Taken after "paint day three!"

Got the front and rear suspension installed. Most all of it powder coated. At least the car is now rolling on it's own wheels. No more dollies and horsing it around the garage.

Originally had planned to have exterior painted professionally but decided to do it myself, with my buddy's help. A real learning experience! But overall I think it will come out better as time is not something I have to pay for so I can spend all that is necessary to do the job right.

Discovered it takes a lot more work than I had ever tought! About 100 hours of prep for every hour of spray time! Front fenders only major components yet to do, although have done a lot of the prep on them. Have the valences and some brackets plus bolts to do! Thank goodness for having a sand blasting cabinet! Really gets a workout.

Going to hang doors next, paint trunk interior and put trunk lid on. Then probably do engine/drive train so it can be moved more easily. Then interior, including dash and instruments and finally front fenders/bumpers,hood and exterior trim. Putting in new headliner, carpet, and front seat covers. Everything else is in good shape and will just be cleaned and reinstalled.

Here's a couple of pix as it first saw the sunshine with new paint. Still doing some finishing compounding and buffing.

Just found a few pix of the front and rear suspension. As I said before, most all of this has been powdercoated, including the gas tank.

Makes it nice having a lift in the garage! My Christmas present to myself last year!
