TRIPLET BUNNIES!!!

gomopar440

Livin' my life...one gas station at a time.
:bday: Yep, Tic Tac had three little baby bunnies yesterday evening! :xl: :xl: :xl: (EDIT: +1:xl: We found another so it's actually four)
When I went to feed her, Tam noticed she looked thinner. Then we saw one of the newborns outside the little house I made for her. When I put it back in the nest I saw two more babies. Tic Tac has been pulling her belly hair out to line the nest with fur for warmth and right now they're tucked in under it. I'll have to wait till they get a little more active and moving around on their own before I can probably get some good pics.

Now kinda I know how you felt Beep. Pretty cool stuff! :giggedy:

Awww...baby rabbits are nekkid and ugly and so darn cute. Does that make sense? lol. I used to raise them on our farm. Three is actually a pretty small litter, heck, one of mine had 15!

and this happened how?
I thought you had just the one bunny... :hmmm:

Well, I kinda liked the idea of having a pair of them so they could keep each other entertained while we weren't around. I got what I THOUGHT was another male wabbit that looked just like TaterTot except this one was slightly smaller and didn't have any black marks on it's back or ears. Since it was smaller than TaterTot, I called it TicTac:p

Long story short, TicTac wasn't a buck (male bunny).

On the upside, at least now I know that TaterTot isn't gay.:nanna:

Hey DusterGal,
From what I understand, the first litter is usually pretty small compared to normal. And since we got her probably no more than two months old, I'm positive this IS her first litter. Given time, TaterTot will loosen her up:bwuhaha:

And Ho,
I don't go for dudes (which I thought TicTac was until yesterday), animals or chicks with more body hair than me.
At least least I've got an alibi, unlike the snake charmer over there. :toot: *points at beeper*:D

Well, that's a relief. :D

I had a male rabbit that would do ANYTHING...other male rabbits, the dog, my foot, a baseball, cabbages in the garden...he was a sicko.

Strangely enough he could never impregnate the female rabbits...probably cause he was usually bopping around on their face instead of on their backside.

You plan on keeping all of them?

That would be tough to do. I'll probably sell them back to the pet shop when they're old enough. If I keep all of them, I'll be asking for more of the same (baby bunny) trouble... I may swap one of them with the new kids so I can keep either two males or two females together and I won't have a repeat of this kind of suprise again. [smilie=2:

Well, here's the "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" update on the bunny situation:

The Good: We found another bunny in the nest so she actually had a total of four in this litter.:giggedy:

The Bad: Tam called me this afternoon and told me that two of them were dead. :(

The Ugly: TicTac (Momma bunny) is ignoring the babies for the most part. We're looking up info on this on the internet and have found that this behavior is not too uncommon but still is rather unsettling for me and Tam. Rabbits normally only feed their babies twice a day and then get as far away from them as possible to keep from attracting predators. This isn't a danger for TicTac but her instincts don't know any better.

The remaining two bunnies are still nice and pink and warm but we have too keep a very close watch on them to make sure they continue to stay healthy. We're getting some supplies ready in case we have to try to bottle feed them to sustain them.

Well, keep them in your prayers if you would. The first couple of weeks are going to be the toughest. If they survive till then they should be ok.:helpme:

bottle feeding them makes them very very tame and friendly in general..tho you will get VERY attached to them..if you do switch to bottle feeding try and get the mother to nurse them as much as posible...tho it may prove imposible try anyway as this will build there imunities..as nasty as this may sound...you may need to see if she is even produceing milk at all

We've tried gently (as possible) holding the momma down and letting the babies nurse but I can't tell if they are getting any milk. When we tried the small bottle with kitten formula (reccomended by a rabbit care website) they seemed to just want to curl up and go back to sleep like they weren't interested in feeding right then. I think we're just going to have to wait and see how they are progressing with their mom taking care of them. At least I hope she is...

Shite, it sounds like me.

wee, bunnies are cool... :xl: :shifty:

Well, about 11PM she went into the nest and let the babies nurse for a while (I think/hope). We're continuing to watch her and the little bummies closely but I am feeling better since seeing that she IS allowing them to nurse after all.

The babies already have wiskers and a very very fine layer of fur starting on them. The very tip of their tails have the most fur for some reason. They are about 2.5" long and about 1" around. Their ears are about 3/8" long and are still laid flat back against their necks. When I was handling them their skin felt kind of silky because of the new fur growing in. The momma bunny has been very even tempered throughout this whole ordeal and still seems to want our attention. It doesn't seem like she's threatened by us being around her bunnies at all. The fact that I've always hand fed her some before filling her food bowl ever since we got her as a little bunny probably has a lot to do with it.

So far so good...

They were actually venturing outside the nest on their own today even though they still don't have their eyes open yet. We took the opportunity to snap a few pics since they seemed to have a lot of energy at the time. They seem to be getting bigger fairly quickly. One of them has his eyelids almost halfway open. They should be hopping around the cage like little mexican jumping beans fairly quickly.
