Daimler AG has announced that it will spend $500 million to build a new manufacturing facility in Charleston, South Carolina. The plant will build the next-generation Sprinter full-size van that will be sold under the Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner brands in the U.S. The U.S. is second only to Germany in terms of Sprinter sales. According to figures reported by Daimler, 25,745 Sprinters were sold in the U.S. last year. The new plant is expected to create 1,300 direct jobs in the area and may create more secondary employment depending on whether Daimler elects to have components made in the U.S....  more (full story/sharing links)
