The Other Passion...

Last week/weekend was just horrible for me. Usually when that happens I go work on the cars but this time around the cars were part of the problem so I was only getting more and more stressed when I went to the garage. So, I decided it was time to get back into one of my other hobbies...

Picked this beauty up on Saturday and put two boxes through it before I had even owned it for 3 hours. I had forgotten how much better I feel when I get home from the range. :giggedy:

So are of you 'nuts into stuff that goes bang?

I had a lot of fun with guns long ago, but it never became a passion. I had a M1911A for a while, which was my only handgun though I've fired quite a few. I also had a 1983 Ducks Unlimited collector's edition Remington 1100 12-gauge, which I gave to my brother (he still has it), and way back I picked up a Ithaca Model 33 Deerslayer (no, it was not a Model 37) smooth-bore slug 12ga, which I got on the cheap because one of my friends who's a gun nut said it wasn't worth much with a smooth-bore slug barrel, as well as the fact that the bluing was essentially gone. I sold it on the cheap, too. I found out later it was fairly rare, and the only shotgun of which I'm aware (and I'm by no means a gun expert) on which you could just hold the trigger and keep racking the pump action, and it would empty itself. Apparently, this feature didn't make it to the Model 37. One old feller told me the 33 was the origin of the term "street sweeper" in regards to shotguns. I could empty that sucker just as quickly as the semi-auto 1100, but it was a lot more fun to do.

My Grandpa had an over-under dual-trigger 10ga from around the turn of the previous century, in flawless condition. I only saw it a couple of times, and fired it once when I was maybe 12: "Go ahead, li'l Jass--pull both triggers at once. Use your index and middle fingers... that's it." The kick shot me backwards about 20 feet and I had a nasty bruise the size of Rhode Island across my upper arm, shoulder, and chest. He and my Dad found it pretty funny. I no understand humor when he do dat.

I guess when Grandpa passed away, it was willed to my uncle. I always forget to ask him about it.

I took a shotgun on trade, took it out to the dump and ran through the two boxes of shells that came with it, then traded it the next week for some wheels. that and bb guns as a kid was about it. hunting and shooting would've put a serious dent in my beer drinking hobby :D

So are any of you 'nuts into stuff that goes bang?

The only thing I like to hear go bang... is my headboard :)

Guns should not be owned by a lot of people. This has been proven time and again. Police, Military and RESPONSIBLE people should be the only ones allowed near a trigger.

When I started the gunsmith course I only had a Beretta 92FS 9mm semi-auto pistol and a Remmington 870 Express 12 gauge pump shotgun. I started adding to my collection so I could get more familiar with other types of guns and have something I could actually lay my hands on during various parts of the course. I'm trying to keep the types of firearms I aquire quite varied. That way I'll have an example from most different types of gun actions to work with.

I currently have seven firearms:

1) Rock Island Armory, 1911 Compact Tactical CSP, .45ACP, semi-auto pistol. It's a 3.5" barreled Officer's model that I use as my concealed carry firearm.

2) Ruger, M77 Mk II, .270 Rem, All-Weather bolt action rifle with 3-9x40 Redfield scope. This is my big critter gitter.

3) Remmington, 870 Express Magnum, 12 Ga, Pump Shotgun (same one mentioned above). This one is my bad guy/home intruder gitter.

4) Ross Rifle, 1905 Mk II, .303 British, Straight pull bolt action rifle. These were used, and generally disliked, by Canadian troops in the trenches during WW1. The tolerences were too tight for the muddy trench conditions and they would jam a lot. The Canadian snipers had much better luck with them since they were usually better able to keep their rifles clean. This one needs some stock work and I'm planning on using it as a project gun when I go to a full time Gunsmith School next year.

5) Stoeger, Uplander (been cut down some [smilie=i:), 12 Ga, side by side shotgun. Yup, it's got two triggers, just like Jass likes 'em :p). I've cut the barrel down from 26" to 19" and the butstock was chopped off leaving only the pistol grip. It's now 26.25" overall length, or 1/4" over the minimum legal length. I'm submitting a ATF Form 1 along with the fee so I can cut it down further. The barrel will end up being 10.5" and it will be 19" overall. When it's done it will be almost identical to the one Mad Max used in the movies. This one is nothing more than a big grin gitter.;)

6) Norinco, MAK-90 (modified AK-47), 7.62x39mm, Semi-auto Assault Rifle. This one has a synthetic Dragunov stock on it and I'm adding a side mount sight rail to it. Nice to have around for when the Zombies attack.

7) Homebuilt AR-15, .223 Rem, 10x42 Super Sniper scope, Semi-Auto Heavy Barrel Varmint rifle. This one I built from the ground up specifically for long range shooting at targets from 300 to 800 yards.

The Beretta 92 FS (w/5" barrel) was traded for a Springfield Armory XD-45 (w/4" barrel). I just recently traded the SA XD-45 for the even smaller Rock Island Armory 1911 listed above. I also previously had a Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle, but that was sold to fund the AR-15 I just built.

I almost forgot: I got Tam a Kel-Tec PF-9, 9mm, Semi-Auto Pistol with an flush mount Armalaser on it for her birthday present. She uses it as her concealed carry piece.

These are all I've got ...for now. I'm still looking for a nice S&W Model 629 with an 8" barrel (Dirty Harry's revolver) and a Winchester Model 94, 30-30, lever action Carbine (for my dad).

Boy, you really give 'er when you wank one out, huh? :D

True enough, but how do you determine whether someone's responsible? "Well, Bob worked at the post office for 23 years... he was never late, never sick, and though he wasn't much of a talker he was a nice-enough guy. Who knew that 3 days after we laid him off he'd come back and kill 7 people?"

I know you're in Canada, but the U.S. Constitution was written with the right to bear arms simply because it was folks whom owned guns that primarily fought the revolution that allowed this country to be... yes, times have changed, but historically there have been nutjobs with guns since the advent of firearms. But the U.S. Constitution guaranteed that right simply so that were the form of government they laid out suddenly prove to be inadequate, the populus could change it by popular uprising.

Some would argue that should have already taken place, and they may not be wrong... but as a nation, we're rich, fat, and happy so we allow government to get bigger and tax us more and more, and we do nothing to change it except elect different people who are already part of the machine anyhow. I'm to the point where I don't think anything will change regardless of who gets elected... we'll still spend tax money so that welfare cases can leech the system to buy weed and have more babies, taxes will continue to increase, and rights will continue to be taken away from the common man.

im with doc on this one....my dissabeled mother qualifys for ZERO care...my wife had to fight fro 3 years to get any type of care for her disabbility...and now ive been cut off of medical insurance....this country is a POS due to it being ran by the corrupt and its only getting worse

I have heard the horror stories of the Millennium guns. I'll pass on those. The Taurus is almost as big as a full size S&W M&P model (thats the one I really wanted). The next purchase will likely be an M&P .40 compact then this one will be relegated to target duty.

Don't get me confused with gomopar440. He has a nice collection. ;) However, my collection is decent too. The Taurus is the 7th one in the safe. In addition to that I've got the:

- Marlin Model 25, .22 LR, bolt action, cheap Tasco 4x15 scope. First gun I ever shot. Given to me by my granddad. This one has seen A LOT of rounds. Still go plinking with it once in a while but I'll probably retire and replace it soon.

- Savage Model 99, .22 Hi-Power, lever action. This one is extremely rare so I am told. I can't even buy ammo for it anymore. Again given to me by my granddad. It was at one point my great-grandfathers gun. It rarely leaves the safe.

-Remington Model 700ADL, .270, synthetic stock, Tasco World Class 3-9x40 scope, Harris ultralite bi-pod, bolt action. The first gun I bought on my own. This one is the deer rifle.

-Savage Model 340, .30-30, bolt action. Again passed down from my granddad. I refuse to even shoot this one anymore. We've never been able to hold a group with it so I'm pretty sure the rifling was shot out of it long before I got it.

-Crescent Arms 12ga, side-by-side, dual trigger shotgun. This is the other one that belonged to my great-granddad and was handed down. It is permanently retired. It hangs around simply for sentimental value.

-Remington Model 870 Express Magnum 20ga, pump shotgun. My dad bought this one for me upon graduation from my Hunter Safety Education course. This was my first real gun and has seen a lot of shells and field time. Use it for mostly squirrel and dove hunting as of late.

I've got a fairly sizeable list of additions I want to make in the coming months. Numbers one and two being the previously mentioned M&P .40 and a Savage MKII .22 LR to replace the Marlin...

Are you implying that I am not responsible? :wtf: If you will note in the picture the safety IS on and though you cannot see it the magazine IS empty. I keep every gun I own (except for the 870 shotgun) locked in a safe. Ammo and magazines are kept locked in a separate safe. The only reason I keep the 870 out is for home defense and it is unloaded. I have no children in my house and if I did that gun would also be locked up (and it does go in the safe when friends with kids come over to the house). The guns only come out of the safe if I am going to the range, hunting or if they are being cleaned. I have been planning to get my concealed carry license since I turned 21. I could simply go to the county courthouse, fill out the paperwork and get the license but I refuse get the license until I can take the handgun safety/defense course before hand. I see nothing irresponsible about that... :doubt:
