Some guys...

...never quit.

My friend Kevin showed up at my house yesterday morning. This is the guy with the gorgeous '71 Charger R/T that was in Mopar Muscle a few years back.

He'd just come from the Mopar Nationals, by way of Minneapolis--yes, he went there then backtracked. On the dolly behind his '99 Ram Sport was a 1-of-265 1980 Aspen R/T, slant-six/3-speed stick/3.21 8.25" axle. The car is black with a red gut, and a pretty nice buy at $1200.

Funny thing, time. When I had my Nightwatch Blue '80 Aspen, slanty/4-speed, he ridiculed me about my F-body fetish. A few months back, he suddenly developed one of his own. He was really looking for a '76-'77 Super Pak car (the two worst years of F-car from a quality standpoint, for the record), and had found a '77 360-2v Super Pak R/T but the guy wouldn't give him a price and he got impatient. Of course, the '77 was an awfulmatic (they never built 360/4-speed F-bodies), and when the '80 popped up with a stick it was all over.

The former owner had sent him the title for the car, and it was registered and insured before he ever picked it up. So I cut out of work a little early yesterday, and we spent the afternoon cruising in the old girl. After a service stop at Stretch's workplace, we probably put 200 miles on it, just rolling past the sites from our youth. It was very cool to be out in an old manual-trans Mopar, even if it was a slant six Aspen in fairly poor tune. It ran great and we really enjoyed ourselves, even stopping by the local A&W for a root beer, hung off the window like the good old days. On his way out of town today, he stopped by Auto Value with her back on the tow dolly, headed back to Minnesota--this time to visit with his sister. After that, it's back to Atlanta.

His plans for the car involve an overdrive 4-speed behind a mildly-worked 400, backed up by an 8.75" axle, but to keep it looking totally stock without lifting the hood. I gave him a pair of quarter-window louvers from a similar-year F-bod, and he's already got a rear spoiler from the factory. It should be a cool ride when it's done.

So, why is it that I say some guys never quit? Well, his garage lays out like this at this point in time:
  • 1971 Dodge Charger, 440/4-speed, all original except the Keisler 5-gear he recently installed.
  • 1971 Plymouth Duster Twister, 340/auto pirated from a '71 Demon, otherwise all original 318/console car, still awaiting restoration.
  • 1978 Chrysler Cordoba 400HP/console auto, white with red leather gut.
  • 1979 Chrysler 300, E58/727/3.21SG 9.25", factory sunroof car, currently sporting a '71 340, 727, and 3.23 Sure Grip from my '72 Chicken.
  • 1980 Dodge Mirada, sub-15,000-mile Chrysler executive car, 318/console auto, optioned to death and back.
  • 1980 Dodge Aspen R/T, already discussed.
  • 1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z, probably the nicest one in existence. Full rotisserie restoration, 345-horse 350 in place of the original 305, sissymatic. If it wasn't NOS, new repro, or absolutely perfect used, it didn't end up on this car. I don't like this car, but he had one in high school and 3rd-gen Camaros have a spot in his heart. Arguably, it's nicer than the '71 R/T. Of course, the R/T was restored 13 years ago and has been driven--hard--as is this one.
  • 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport Quad Cab, 318/auto. He got it new, and now has almost 200K miles on it. Fun subject, this truck, as it was a lease on which he had no intent of making the final purchase... but he did. Long story.
He's out of room, so I have no idea where he plans to put the Aspen once he gets it home, but he bought it anyway.

Oh, to have the time, money, and lunacy to take it to the level which Kevin has...

that's quite a yard full and the Artie will fit in just fine.

Glad you got a ride. I, like a little Freshman girlie called on in Algebra class, peed my pants a little just rolling the dopa out of the shop on it's own power today. It too is a 400hp non catalyst but of the 76 variety. A 100 yard trip between driveways was not wasted. :2thumbs: still needs a little :liar:work to get her up to goat farkin' standards :p

Funny, last week my pal Larry brought home an 80 Aspen R/T. It's a nice rust free car that has what appears to be an E58 360, 4 speed, and air. Everything appears very original, just a bit worn. Personally, I dig the car, and made it clear that I'd love to own it. I'm going out to his place this weekend. If I can muster any presence of mind while on the property, I'll write down what's on the fender tag, decode, and post it.

But the best looking ones. :)
I love my f body. Needs a four forty though.

And he'd agree with ya. Personally, I'm partial to the '80 model year since I owned one similar to his... not an R/T, slant six/4-speed.

Glad ya had a good time Doc. It's nice to just fuck off for a while and go cruising. :)

I took DCF's big ol' New Yorker for a short ride last evening. Hung the dealer plate on it, dropped $20 in the tank (didn't even bring it to 1/4 tank), and headed out. It is nice to cruise those old Mopars, it has all the rattles and shakes that I remember so well from my 69 Chryco. Couldn't spend much time in it, was getting dark (a no-no with a dealer plate) and the fuel pump was laying down, so not wanting to be stranded, I headed back to the shop. :(
But for a short while, it was kinda fun. :)

great story Doc! i love my effy. i believe they are the underdogs among the popular bodies. great to know that this place does not bash f-bodies like other sites. *alllpar* :silenced: it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. :xl:

We do dig F bodies around here. I haven't really researched these cars much. Referring to the aforementioned 80 R/T my pal just got, is anyone aware if the E58 engine was even available in 80, or did someone just rob the valve covers, intake, carb, and air cleaner from a Lil Red?

The E58 was available in '80, but not with a 4-speed. Though I've heard otherwise, I've never seen an E58 prior to 1978, nor have I ever seen a factory 360/4-speed car, even with a 2-barrel. That's not to say one or two didn't get built, but I've not seen any D21 cars optioned with the 360 in 20 years of looking at 'em.

I'm not making a prediction, but as the "desirable" cars continue to work their way to the stratosphere in pricing I think we're going to see an increase in F/M/J-car values. Since most weren't built with particularly interesting drivetrains, my guess is that tastefully done "what if" cars will really gain some value. I may be wrong, but don't tell me that for another 5 years so we can see where the market goes.

It was pretty funny watching him try to downshift to first only to grind gears and remember it's a 3-speed. :D Old habits die hard.

It really made me wish I still had my '80, for sure.

One thing I found interesting, and I'd never seen this prior to Tuesday (nor had Kevin or Stretch)): there's a bright yellow decal on the core support which reads something to the effect of: "THIS VEHICLE IS NOT EQUIPPED FOR AIR CONDITIONING". My '80 didn't have air, and it didn't have this decal. We discussed it quite a bit over the course of the afternoon, and though at first we though it was due to the puny radiator, we later realized perhaps it's because his car has no dash vents other than the defroster; my '80 had all four vents like an AC car even though it never had the option. Anyone ever seen this decal before? I told him to lift it with a heat gun and have it reproduced.

I too have an Aspen R/T stashed out back. Its a black on black Super Pak car with a 360-2v/console auto. Bought it out of a JY a few years ago for $200. Found it with the hood up and thought the motor was toast. Well the rats nest had protected it. Threw a carb and dist. on it and it ran. Trans is toast however. This is the only pic that I have of it on here, with me standing next to it.

cool!

I like how it says "KEEP" on it in big red letters. Worried you'll forget which vehicles you want to keep around? :D
