So, what did you do this Memorial Day?

68R/T

I got drunk and swallowed my teeth, now
I figured that it was time to clean the bugs & dust off of the kids.

Of course, afterwards I had to make sure that everything still works good. :toot:

Very nice. :bravo:

I worked most of the weekend, but I took mine out and got it dirty on Sunday. The long weekend in Canada was the previous week to yours.

Good looking cars!

What did I do this Memorial Day? GLAD YOU ASKED.

I bought this heap on Memorial day
image.jpeg

It's an '84 Cherokee.. The first year. 2.5 L, 4 speed. It was listed for $800, I got it for $700.. No rust, interior is great except for driver's side seat bolster. 105,xxx miles. Came with factory turbine wheels, and a two door! The clutch master is actually seized.. The pedal doesn't move. My buddy Jones and I drove forty minutes south on I81 to check it out. I bought it. We got it to the local Advance to find out that A: they closed ten minutes earlier (there were no fuses in the car.. No wipers and it just started raining, no turn signals, but head, tail, brake were working) and B: the previous owner called while we were in the parking lot and asked if he could get his battery back.. Ordinarily, I'd be a little miffed that I paid $700 for a running Jeep with no electrics, and a rented battery, but I had a spare battery in the truck just for this occasion. He showed up, we swapped batteries. After he left, we realized that my spare battery only had 11V.. Wouldn't start the Jeep in gear. Remember, no clutch. Thankfully, I also brought a jump box for just such an occasion.. So, my buddy Jones has to hold the hood and the jump box while I start it in gear in the Advance parking lot. At this point, the clerks have closed out and are watching this debacle as they wait for their rides..(why don't Advance employees own cars? No idea...). I get it started, Jones simultaneously runs with it, attempts to pull the jump box and drop the hood. Most of this works. The hood lands on the red alligator clamp, and pulls it out of the box. I circle the building three times while he gets everything into my truck and starts it to follow me.. I drive down Rt 11 with a jumper lead hanging out of the hood at nightfall in the rain. Fuck it, the headlights work, it's driving.

Twenty miles later, outside of Strasburg it overheats. I watched it creep slowly, and while going down hills, I'd knock it into neutral. This tactic lasted seven miles.. I cut the motor, and coast another three miles or so downhill. Jones pulls in behind me and says that he could taste the antifreeze when the cap blew and he drove through a cloud of it (after I cut the motor). We spend the next forty minutes removing the grille, and installing the 1960's vintage tow bar I'd brought in the truck for just such an occasion.

The next twenty miles go off without a hitch. I stayed in the Jeep to operate the brake pedal (for the lights, so that people didn't run into us). The head gasket is good, it still starts and runs great.

For another $250 or so shipped, I got all of the clutch and brake hydraulic parts, tune up parts, and radiator, T-stat, and rad cap. This thing will be my off roader. Low buck, doors off, buy a cheap winch.. Jones is my Jeep buddy, and he's been off-roading solo for a while.. I used to have a TJ, and miss banging around on trails.

All of this sounds expensive. $950 for an old Cherokee with the sole intent of running it into stuff off road.. Long story short, I'm also getting divorced. Nothing serious, we've grown apart. I'm helping her find a place, she doesn't want the house or cars.. We're splitting all of her big moving expenditures before we split the savings, etc.. Think of it as a roommate moving out.. No fighting, just moving on. As a result, I'll be strapped for cash in the next six months. Maintaining my stuff is cheap. Buying new things, or heavily modifying them isn't.. I've wanted another Jeep for a couple of years.. This was my chance.. I can sit on this thing and take it on some easy trails until my finances level out again..

Stupid long story wrapped up? It took us forty minutes to drive to the Jeep, and another three hours in the rain to get home again. Best. Memorial. Day. Ever.

And I had a boring day of wiping my cars. :(

Divorcing on civil terms is rare. The best way to keep it civil is DO NOT let a lawyer get involved. I've known couples that started out civil and contacted a lawyer to handle the paperwork. The lawyer proceeded to create hostilities that in turn created jobs for two different lawyers. They're all sharks that work together. :naughty:

Yeah, we're still friends.. And that means we like each other enough to be adults about this, and that nobody wins legal battles.. We can't afford anything messy, and the will to do harm isn't there to begin with. Neither one of us were raised that way. Hell, she'll still watch my dog if I can't take him on trips, and come over if our friends do.. We've already been through the rough spot, that was realizing we weren't doing each other any favors as a couple.. Funny thing is, the car disease had nothing to do with it. We just became opposites.

Cool Jeep, not very often do you see a rust free one of those around here.

Sucks about your marriage, even though the friendship remains. :(

Yeah, divorce sucks, sucks more if there are kids involved. Glad there is civility between you, that really helps.

Cool Jeep, I like those.
