Satty's got cancer...

mr340

I don't always drink beer, but when I do
Finally got off my arse and did something productive with the Satellite tonite.
We managed to remove the leaky rear window without breaking it !!! [smilie=e:
This is what we found hiding under the 7 gallons of sillycone that was packed inth the window channel....

Not really as bad as I was expecting to fid under there. Looks like all the rot is in the filler panel, nothing anywhere else on that frame!!

I changed the Title to avoid confusion.
69.5. never had a vinyl roof, had lots of sealer, and silicone packed into the channel.
M_M, If you do, be happy if it is confined to the filler panel area ( yours is available).

My 71 had the same problem, several hours spent grinding and spot welding strips of metal then sealing it all up with fiberglass took care of it.
I'm positive the same will be found when I pull the windshield...someday. [smilie=s:

Probably the lower corners on a '71, beeper... wet carpets are a dead giveaway; don't let it go or it will rot the cowl. That was the only rust on my Bee, and a problem on five of the seven 1971-74 cars I've owned.

The car that looked the worst, mind you, had the best lower corners of the lot. [smilie=e:

Man, mr340, I'm trying to think of a donor car in the array of yards I frequent, but I'm coming up blank on a sedan.

Being a sedan is gonna be the biggest setback, I think I'm gonna have to fabricate a new channel from scratch. The good part is that it's fairly straight, not too many tricky angles to worry about.
the possible donors look to be '68-'70 Satellite/Coronet/Belvedere (oh belvedere....) [smilie=e:

I keep the car as dry as possible doc. Car never see's rain, is stored inside and only sees a washing a couple times a year at best.

Perhaps next winter I will rip the vinyl roof off and tackle it.

Fixing that rail is doable Don...lots of quality time with a grinder and tin snips...

Most people use the cheap generic silicone to "fix" things. I believe it is acidic.

I gots tin snips!lots a tin snips! [smilie=e: Don't know if it's straight enough for my break [smilie=e: , but i'm (& my sheet metal tools) are available [smilie=e: (well if you schedule it a year & a half in advance! J/k on the year in advance, but this time of year some notice will be required! [smilie=e: Rich.

*Checks calender* Thanks Rich, I'll let ya know when I have the metel ready. I'm gonna cut up a perfect toyota tailgate for the metal [smilie=e:

Theres a 69 4dr sedan at the yard by my house. Ifin ya want I could go pop the trim off saturday and take a look at it.

That would be great, but don't make a special trip for me, only if you plan on being there anyway..

I prefer old caddy hoods for patch panels, nice and thick. I did a resto on an old new yorker last yr and you could stick your fist through it just above the seam behind the rear window. It had been re topped once over the yrs and was pitted everywhere. Ended up duraglassing the entire roof after sandblast and self etching primer. We didnt install the emblems so as to not make a moisture weeping point there again. It was his dads car new and I made him promise to never leave it outside. Turned out real nice-its April on the scat pack calender.

If I had an old Caddy laying around, I surely would use the metal for patches ( nice and thick), but all I have here is a toyota tailgate, and some A-Body fenders. And we all know just how valuable Mopar metal is .... ( I think I can e-bag those "Hemi" fenders, and finance the Satellite project completely!!!)

well, I did some grinding this evening on the window channel, and it looks like this is going to be a pretty simple fix [smilie=e: . The majority of the channel has found it's way back into the earth, and the little that is left will be cut out as soon as the new channel is fabricated. [smilie=e:
here is what i have left to work with now...
