Pics of my Jeep...finally

Omnipotent Seaweasel
Ok first some info...93 Grand Cherokee 4X4. 4.0 I6 w/ 375,000+ miles. 200,000 of which are Hwy miles due to several road trips by original owner from Michigan to California and back a few times. PW, PS, PDL, Tilt, CC, Pioneer cd player, Remote starter (which I don't think works, then again the batteries in the key fob might be dead) The speedometer is in Canookian....er Kph, switching that over to Mph as soon as I have the time to do so.

376495 kms = 233,943 miles ;) Doesn't look like a bad ride otherwise. Just my eyes or a bit of a valve cover leak?

On the phone with my mom and she pointed out the fact it's Kilometers not miles too. Big DUH! on my part. And yes it has an oil leak too. By the way, what's the difference between a Grand Cherokee and a Grand Cherokee Laredo? Mine is the Laredo model judging from the label on the passenger fender.

I don't believe there is much except some trim but XL is more knowledgable about the Grand's than I.

Why change the metric speedo? Can't read "Orange"? :D

I can but I'd prefer Mph so I don't have to guestimate speed with a smokey on my back door. Kph in America isn't exactly accurate for me.

Paid $1000 for it. Bad news...the tranny is starting to slip and depending on what the tranny guy tells me I might not be able to afford to fix it at the moment:(

I have no idea what tranny is under it. Here's what it's doing, first off since it has such high miles D is a bit laggy so I started using 1 to take off and put it in 2 once it got going a bit and then went into D all shifts were smooth. Was working great last night, went to work today and it shutters no matter what gear I'm in. If I had a stick shift I would say the clutch wasn't fully engeged, at least that's exactly what it feels like. It's revving higher than normal but only revving to about 3500 - 4000 but rather quickly where as it only used to hit about 2500 for me to get going at a good in town speed. Then there's the whirring sound:doubt: I'm hoping it's an easy & inexpensive fix. I'm thinking torque converter and a friend said something about bands but I know squat about trannys. Knowing my luck it's a tranny fuse or something equally non existent:D

whatever, I am just royally pissed and need to vent. Sorry for the temper tantrum:doubt: Believe me I wanna say alot worse!

Venting just so happens to be a "permitted use" of this site.

Find out what you have for a tranny ( in the jeep, not in the bedroom), and post a part wanted ad, someone here might be able to help you.....

I am 99% sure you have the AW4 trans. LOTS of them out there. '87 to '98 Cherokees with 4.0. '93 Grand Cherokees with the 4.0.

Yeah I got caught up in the frustration and wasn't thinking rationally at all:D I don't deal with stress very well lately.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, how do I find out what tranny I have? Also My g/f mechanic is suggesting the transfer case is shot not the tranny but I haven't had anyone look at it yet.

Pull the pan and see what there is to see in there. On occaision you can replace the filter and oil and bring the pressures back up enough to get it moving again. Jeep over the yrs gets drivetrain components from whoever they can for the cheapest price so who knows what it is, I was hoping it was torqueflite but it doesnt sound like it. MIght be borg-warner.

Take it to a trans shop and just pay them to tell you whats wrong then shop around for either the trans or transfer case.
Changing a transfer case is driveway friendly, changing the transmission out is not driveway friendly.
