Paint shipping across the border

6pkrunner

I think I'm pleasurin' myself but I'm just
Any of the bodyshop/resto guys ever get paint from stateside? The reason I ask is that in an effort to fund Mopar projects, I'm trying to restore some 70s motorcycles and use them as funding. However pre-1979 Honda did not have any of its paint formulas listed. I tried one shop that "knew" they could mix it. Well $150 later and its nowhere near the original.
A guy stateside claims he has the formulas and the feedback he has gotten so far seems to bear this out. The problem is that he treats the border like a dead raccoon and refuses to send into Canada, citing too many hassles. Well just starting off on this quest has already tossed up a few roadblocks. Seems paint is listed as a hazardous product and is verboten or frowned upon for shipping.

Bottom line, any of you guys get paint across the border? And close doesn't cut it. These vintage bike guys make the Mopar fanatics look like pikers as far as adherence to correctness. And since there's even a smaller niche market than Mopars the loss of coins for incorrect paint makes the rest of the project a loss. 99.5% correct is as much as a miss as 10% correct.:D

*EDIT* it should be noted that this is cans (pints) of paint - not aerosol cans which may as well be weapons grade plutonium.

I cant say that I've ever tried. Do you have a part of the bike with the original color still in decent shape? you can get them to put their dohicker on it at a paint shop and that should match it. i would say what the dohicker is called, but frankly i dont have a clue. paint analysis machine. something like that.

Hopeing restoman see's this!.
I went to the post office yesterday for 6pk on this subject, was frowned upon, spat at and handed 3 pamphlets telling me what a bad person I was for even asking aboot liquids crossing the border.

Any nuts members living in maine?, midnight meeting in a bay?.

You think honda people are bad try shootin a harley. I have a 305 scrambler with that chrome tank deal if you know some one who would like to have it. As far a paint goes- I have no idea.:hmmm:

Paint is a hazardous material? Odd...I've had a few Canadians come across and buy paint where I work and they take it back no problem. Granted the cans are factory sealed but why should that make a difference? :wtf: Wonder if the fact it's house paint makes a diff as well?

What about someone transporting across the border and shipping to N.S. ?

ROF!!, re-read thread start, motorcyle paint:D
Anyone in the detroit area that could get it to the sarnia loons?.

Yeah I know he is looking for motorcycle paint but as far as "hazardous chemicals" go, why would they allow house paint but not car/cycle paint? That's what I was getting at. Are different kinds of paint classified differently as far as the border is concerned?

If its acrylic enamel it contains lead and toulene and all sorts of icky stuff that the EPA doesnt want us to play with. If its a typical house paint its either latex or alkyd which is water or oil base. You can get hardener for alkyd but its just not the same.

so put it in a house paint can. who's gonna know the difference.

"no officer, im going to help my buddy paint his house........"

..Not to mention scolded, ridiculed, smacked on the hand with a ruler and have RETURN TO SENDER stamped on your forehead. All this before you can say Sorry but I just didn't know.. which brings on yet another round...and so on.
Yup, tried that once..and that was only for sending it within our borders.

I got a strong impression that it was not allowed to send such materials through the mail. :D

That would certainly work for sure old wise 68. But that person would have to get across the border with it.:D

Blah...blah...blah...blah (UPS)...

-funny, I thought that Rustycuda would have had something to say on this subject. He ships some stuff around doesn't he? Seems like he may have less than nothing to offer. Way less , way way less, way way way way less than nothing to say.:)

But in all fairness, I would say the paint I am looking at from buddy is $104USD. Now if the unmentionable company that ships as a secondary business venture, gouging people and making their lives a living hell, it would come to triple what the GNP of the world would be - times two. But a bill of well over $300 shipping/handling/dangerous goods handling/customs/excise/etc from them, in all honesty would not surprise me. And that part I am deadly serious about. And that's only UPS's cut - hey I have had at the door a $14.99 egouge part and on top of that $35.47 UPS charges. $45 decals and UPS adds $60 plus UPS charges. No chit. And you wonder why I have an adversion to them?

I avoid martin paint as a general rule but if you can get the local napa do it in nitram- its damn close to centari 2000. Ive done a few log trucks with that and thought it was decent. All I can say is Fuk Brown. I cant fuggin believe that shit.:dgt:

I did not miss the other "ups" posts, My stuff is comming fairly local, one thing though, nothing about paint or hazardous materials was ever marked on the boxes & i bought paint & paint stripper from both, just thought it might be a last resort to get what you need, sometimes you have to deal with the devil! Rich.

Damn border!
Have ya tried to get the formula from somewhere else and then get it mixed up your way?
I wonder if my one friend (who used to work at BASF) could get that info?
Not sure if just a formula is going to help.

I know you didn't, it was just another golden chance for me to vent on my disdain about the brown shirts. And no, don't insult the Facsist Party by calling them UPS employees.

Smullging is seeming to be the only option, but I really do not endorse this. To have the border goons confiscate $104 worth the paint would be getting off real easy. Criminal records and real world prison time is a possibility. Yes one can say its only paint, but with the border these days and a bunch of idiots looking for quota for suck up leverage......

Mike, i've purchased paint products and brought them accross the border no problem. Por15, zero rust and sem aerosol products. I have my stuff shipped to a relative in upstate Vt. and pick it up there. Saves a bunch on brokerage and taxes....only pay the gst on usd amount when i cross back through Quebec on my way home.

I'm heading down soon so if you need some help i can pick it up and ship it out east from here. Lemme know if i can help and i'll pm the shipping address to ya.

Ron

Ps. I'll be going down a week from friday if that helps
