Norton Antivirus?

Any other programs out there that work well? For free? My subscription is up and I'm not to thrilled about coughing up the coin for renewal....or is it worth the money?

Opinions, advice?

I use McAfee with no problems, but I get free subscriptions to it while I'm in the military (job perks :) ). For the kids computers I've used AVG Free along with some other free spyware blockers. I can't remember which ones and their computers are in MS with them. I'm sure others here will chip in with some better suggestions soon.

AVG FTW

if your not already running FF(firefox) then you should be..also use "no script" and adblock pluss...the combination wont let shit in unless you allow it in yourself

I hate it but I pay for norton across 3 boxes every year for at least the last 5 years. Have never had anything get through.
Using firefox will help keep you safe but like a serious illness, it's easy to take _not_ getting anything for granted. Me? I just pay the money, the piece of mind I get from it is worth it. Knock wood.

I bought one called NOD32 last year when I was at my parents. I think it is $40.00/year. It is less of a memory hog than the others and every bit as good, have had it for about 6months and never had a problem. You get updates just like the others.............check them out at their site NOD 32.

AVG is the way to go. I owned the commercial one for a year and didn't find too much of value beyond the free one, so I stopped my subscription.

The security architect at work - this guy teaches IT folks how to battle hackers - will only use AVG Free and the Windows Firewall on his PCs at home. Anything else just gets in the way of the user and doesn't provide any real security benefit.

For the record, IT policy at work says he has to have other things on his work PC. He hates it, but rules is rules...

Also for the record, I use the security suite provided by my ISP because it's part of the deal.... it's F-Secure and is a high end Enterprise product....

next step is removing that malicious memory hog what is Norton off your HD. Had it paid for it and decided all around usefulness of my PC just went out the toilet.
While not an anti-virus I like Zone alarm as a firewall same as most, the free is just as good as the paid versions.

toddles off to avg land, sounds like a weiner.

When I was making a living fixing people's pc's, I unfailingly took norton off and replaced it with antivir personal edition. There were several times when I would get a sick pc in with fully up-to-date norton. On a few of these occasions, I did a full virus scan with norton, then disabled or uninstalled norton, and did the same with antivir. Antivir found a few viruses that norton completely missed.

This is all completely aside from the fact that norton is incredible bloatware, capable of chewing up memory and cpu cycles at an astounding rate, while providing inferior protection to boot! If you want to slow your computer down while generating lots of heat inside your computer case, norton is an excellent start.

Norton overtakes your computer in MANY ways, and as stated already it's a huge memory hog. AVG is the way to go.

[sarcasm] Surely if they charge for it and it uses all that memory, it MUST provide great protection, right? [/sarcasm]

no viruses with AVG but did notice it was spending alot of time in the Java Files, holy crap there was half a gig of Cached stuff, games I played in 2001 etc!

What is a "virus"? Pets Apple...... :D
I always use AVG free on my pc's. Never a problem.

I've used free AVG for about two years on this antique machine I am typing on. No problems to date. My big beef is it doesn't like large e-mails, such as the gargantuan forwards I get from Mother[smilie=f: (note to self... SELF! Change e-mail addy AGAIN!)

In the past I've used Norton and MacAfee and had failed core file issues with both. I have a Smith & Wesson revolver in the drawer to my right... Does THAT count as protection?

Thanks everyone. AVG is installed and Norton is gone.

Goodbye Norton......

I had Norton Anti-virus and Internet Security. They suck. Then came Antivir.

The only product that I would recommend from Norton is their System Works. Great software. It's not an anti-virus program, it keep you system running at full efficiency by repairing shortcuts, removing trash from registry files, and customizes your computer in ways Windows can't.
