New dog = daughter bit :(

Drowning deep in my sea of loathing...so I'm
Well about 10 days ago we picked up a nice Rotty/black lab mix....maybe more in there who knows? He was about 2.5 years old and seemed like the perfect dog for our family. Everything was going well, a few hiccups that you'll get with a seasoned dog in a new family, but nothing to tip us off to was to come.

Well last night we had to have him put down. :(

He turned on my 13 year old daughter and grab her face and shook her by the face. I was getting ready for bed and all of a sudden head screaming, then more screaming and my wife joined in on the screaming....came dashing out to find my daughter on the floor with blood pouring out of her face. Thank goodness for my industrial and first aid training in the past...stay calm and asses the situation.

Wife was hysterical...told her in a calm and forceful voice to put the dog away (he was very concerned about what happened...he had no idea), then get me paper towels and call 911. Daughter was asking if she was going to die...checked her out quickly...some major facial lacerations, one major one right below her eye..."just" missed the eye! few other punctures and lacerations....she'll be OK!!!

Got pressure on the major wounds to help stop the bleeding, got some clothes on, grabbed the dog and tossed him in the crate and locked it. Ambulance showed up and we took a ride to the hospital.

They Had to call in a plastic surgeon to stitch her up, but she was one tough cookie, very proud of her. Don't think she shed a tear all evening, but when I told her the dog would be gone when we got home, she cried.

Wife called the shelter and explained what happened, and they told her to bring the dog down. They put it to sleep right away. We did not tell my daughters this though....enough trauma for now.

Here she is after all fixed up at the hospital....

Wife said the Dog just turned on her for no reason, no growling, no warning other then a slight twitch in his jowls just a second before he grabbed my daughters face. Thankfully she blacked out for the attack...all she remembers is one second she was sitting beside the dog, next she was on her knees looking at the blood pouring from her face!

She's doing well today, in good spirits...should be being doped up on morphine all day. ;) Should make a good recovery.

WOW !!! Here's hoping for minimal scarring. A similar thing happened to a nephew of mine when he was 8, he's 30 now and still deathly afraid of dogs. :helpme:

ya i bet she will now be terrified of dogs.

hope very few battle wounds for her sake

and hope she heals quickly and keeps with positive thinking.

Wow! Thats scary stuff Brian. I'm at a total loss of words. Thank God you were there and were able to stay calm.

Very strange. Usually the black Lab side would be very good with kids. There might have been a reason that the shelter was not made aware of that it was there in the first place. Best of luck to your daughter and wife and hope they don't start to fear dogs. I would try to get her close to a known good dog as soon as possible to get her trusting dogs again.

damn that sucks..hope she heals up real good

this is one of many high ranking reasons i will NOT take in a seasoned dog..once they are over a year...your not bonded to them and history..unknown..i had a rotty mix..mostly rot...you coulda tossed a couple newborns next to him and they would have been safer there than with most fathers

dogs are pack animals that need to "grow" up into the family pack and know their place in it

Scary shit, Man!
Glad you were there to take control right away. That could have been brutal...

Good move on putting the dog down. He couldn't be trusted.

I'm very glad to hear your daughter is in good spirits. That's key right after something like this.
The stitches are well done, scaring should be minimal, if at all.

Thank you everyone for the kind words, and best wishes. Will pass them on to my daughter.

She's already talking about another dog....but actually being near another big dog might be different. Don't think we will do another rescue dog though, a puppy that we can be certain of it's breeding and blood lines, and can train from an early age.

My brother has two big dogs, and they are know to be "safe". So once she's healed up we will be bring her by to see his dogs.

Aw crap... That must have been terrifying for you all. Glad you stayed calm and got your daughter to the hospital right away. The plastic surgeon did an excellent job with those stitches, and she should heal up around 100% no scarring. Being young helps a lot.

Sorry about the dog, but you did the right thing :-(

My cat who lived 20 years chomped on my face and I needed a few stitches. The doc told me I should have the cat put down, but I said "he's 17 years old and I barked in his face while he slept"... I deserved it

Thank Jester.

Barking in a 17 year old crotchety old cats face while it was sleeping...Yup you got what you deserve! :D

Wife went in to work today....she saw a big dog and started to freak out. As well she's been re-living the attack and weeping most of the day. She might be having a harder time then my daughter.

Mojo for all.

Thats scary stuff. Good to hear that your daughter has a positive outlook.
Here's hoping everyone recovers physically and emotionally.

Oy, a Cujo in disguise. I've been saying for a while now, most dogs are all friendly and slobbery kisses until they aren't. Some breeds seem to be MUCH worse about that than others. I'm glad she's doing as well as she is. Looks like a good surgeon did the cleanup work.

This is just a sad situation for all involved. It sounds like there's some positivity coming from it in your daughter's case, but I hope your wife can get past this as well. Maternal instinct is a powerful thing and she may never trust a dog around her babies again. Can't say I blame her, but it seems like the girls are animal lovers so my hope is that Mom can accept another one in the home. The right dog can be such a blessing. Mine certainly has.

I feel bad for the dog, too. At one point, he was just a cute li'l pup. Somewhere, something went wrong and it's likely it wasn't his fault. Still, you did what was right in this situation. He couldn't be trusted by anyone after that, it's not just your family. Obviously the shelter knew that as well.

Good on ya for keeping your wits about you.

Thanks again guys!

Yes the plastic surgeon did a great job, they are healing up great!

I too feel bad for the dog, but couldn`t risk another incident with us, or another family...that would just be irresponsible. Now if we would just treat human criminals this way....;) (sorry couldn`t resist)

Jeez.

I've been dropping in and out here without reading much, so I missed this.

Crappy situation for sure. Sorry you had to deal with it. But from the sounds of it you dealt with it better than most people I know would have. Hold your head up and hug your daughter.

Just saw this thread, how's she doing TC? Sad situation, for the family and the dog, but he can no longer be trusted.

My now 13 year old has been bitten 3 different times, by 3 different dogs, 2 of those times included stitches all 3 got ER visits. I only bring that up to say he still has no fear of dogs, thank God.
