TheChrysler Technical Center (CTC), possibly the most advanced automotive engineering facility in the world, has addeda high-capacity snow-wind-and-heat dynamometer for all-wheel-drivevehicles.
Since the 1990s, CTC had special dynos which threw snow at cars at high wind speeds to make sure the wipers and air openings didn’t fail during blizzards. Now, a test cell has been adapted to high-poweredAWD vehicles, slamming snow against them at -40° in 100 mph winds, or baking them at130°F.
The wind and temperature capabilities are unchanged; what’s new is a $2.5 million investment to handle up to 350 hp up front and up to 650 hp in back, partly for Jeeps, and partly for the Cummins 4×4 pickups (currently these top the segment with 900 pound-feet of torque). (...) →
