Need security camera advice

Hi all,

I'm probably about to buy a security camera setup, and I need advice. I'm looking at a couple of systems, one has 4 2.4 megapixel cameras and the other has 2 5.0 megapixel cameras. The 4 camera setup has channels for 8 total, and the 2 camera system has channels for 4. I think 2 cameras would do me fine right now, especially with the fact that they can cover a pretty wide area each because of their high resolution making it possible to zoom in if necessary without much pixelation. The big question I have is this: Both systems state that they record in 1080p. Shouldn't the 5 mp cameras enable recording in considerably higher resolution than that if 1080p is obtainable from a 2.4 mp camera?

Here are links to pages on both kits:

best replay is the higher mp the better the playback resolution- zoom is good!
1080 is just the viewing on your screen display

How's it working out so far?

I was researching setups about a year ago for a colleague that was burglarised.
I really forgot all about the details because he wasn't really asking for a recommendation but rather a confirmation of the one he had already decided on.

I wouldn't mind getting a system for the house.

My home system has three monitoring systems - Roscoe, Lola and Otto.
I'm not entirely sure how many pixels each one is, but all three can zoom in in an instant.
Still-capture capability remains to be seen at this time. The audible alert inherent in this type of system is spectacular.
Lola and Otto are definitely high-resolution, Roscoe is a little blurry at times.

Energy consumption is high and the system tends to emit noxious fumes and solid waste on a continual basis.

:)

Gotta love your system Resto. I too have a similar system with 2 large, 1 medium and 1 ankle biter that will make any intruder very wary.

Darn my system must be broken, it only goes off once or twice a year and if ya give him a hug he's your friend for life,

I've heard your system.
It is effective. Very effective. And slobbery.
