My very-first hire ever!

Yeah, no shit. The worst part is, to me, his beating up his own Mom... and how do I know about that? When his Mom got out of the hospital--yes, he hospitalized her--she called her church to ask the priest's advice. The priest was out of town at the time, so she decided to ask the counsel of the church secretary.

Did I mention my Mom was a church secretary for 18 years?

Mom never said anything directly other than this woman called because she was afraid and concerned for her son because of his behavior. Problem was, my brother's wife at the time was an EMT and took the ambulance call and picked her up. She supposedly fell down the steps. However, the ex-sister-in-law overheard her wailing about "how could he do this to me?!"

Several years later, when I rented from him, he got extraordinarily drunk one time and told myself and a few other people about how bad he felt for that time he "hit" his now-deceased mother. Piecing the rest of the story together from people that were closer to him (including his girlfriend at the time of the beating), he was drinking and got frustrated with his mother's total dependency on him (remember--she was completely blind), and started hitting her while she sat in a recliner and eventually threw her down the stairs from the upper apartment.

I lived in that apartment. There were 24 stairs.

She never filed a complaint, much less charges. I often wonder... had she had his temper, would he ever have made it out of diapers?

Now... I've not posted this guy's name but if I had wouldn't that be a red flag if a potential employer were searching for him online? I don't need to do it because there's plenty of shit to be found with a Google search of his name involving the crimes for which he has been caught, charged, and sentenced. There's also a fair bit about stuff he did with which he got away. However, if he was still running around getting away with all the kinds of stuff that he did for years, yes I would.

By the way, his being local, I would be astounded if Stretch didn't know of whom I speak.

Hire someone on blind faith and the references they provide (I never call them myself--most people put friends as references) and you might get burned badly--hell, irreparably. Your call. Me? I'm going to do a little digging... my pay is based on store performance, and I only work because I need the pay.



Oh, and my own references?
  • My pastor, even though I haven't been to church in years. Trust me when I tell you, this man has seen my at my absolute worst. In the depths of depression, I did something so horrible I can't believe he didn't call the cops or the loony squad.
  • My (and Stretch's) former boss--the one with whom I tried my hardest to cause a fatal brain aneurism. I could write a four-page thread in the Jass Hole about the shit I pulled on this guy.
  • My old boss at the gas station, when I was living at home and needed no more money than part-time and knew damned-well I wasn't in a career situation. Hell, I used to call in drunk. I was in my early twenties and didn't much care so long as there was gas in the Charger and legal plates.
They give honest answers, and if my potential employer checks, he can make a decision based on those replies. Shit, the second two can talk at length about what a pain in the ass I was, but inevitably the question will arise: "Why didn't you fire him?" Then they're stuck. :D

out of my ground? not really its called an example .. its a bit extreme .. but its still an example.

seals? in canada we hunt seals. Yes i have had the military call me in regards to a friend that is currently serving in afghan. As for that point .. i was pointing out the fact of discipline .. not hiring. I was at the point of already being hired and working for me.

I know i have nothing to hide .. hunt all you want about me. I dont care. I am simply pointing out the fact that it seems a bit extreme to hunt ones life out on the internet and i am simply stating that i do not agree with that process. Your right i am not in the situation of hiring people .. but neither are you .. as you have already stated.

I know for a fact my current employer never hunted me down on the interent .. simply because we were talking about this same aspect when it came up in the news about a year ago. We both agreed that it was extreme and did not like that mentality. You can say that everyone does it .. but then everyone must also jump off of bridges too. The other side .. they dont even have the internet and have no interest in that way of doing business.

Rustbucket ... as for # 3 .. thats your own choices and a simple hat with some company logo or t-shirt .. on him when doing the walking in womens clothing .. Do you still buy Mopar vehicles after you see a drunk with a mo-hawk? or do you still buy your budweiser beer after you see some gay man giving a reach around to another? does that mean budweiser is gay and mopars are freakish?
#4 ... so he makes a nuisance of himself after hours ... key word is after hours .. did you buy him the beer? did you tell him to go get drunk and cause a scene? I am sure he will have to hear it from the customers when they return. If its only once oh well ... but if its every weekend .. then i would tell him to pack his crap.. However he needs to know the exact reason and at least give him a chance to straighten up .. ya maybe i am a sucker for trying to be helpful.


i agree jester that if i put something up on the internet people are going to find it ... i am trying to point out that it seems a bit extreme to go out hunting for it. Yes i understand (i have said it from the begining) the whole idea of finding people on the interenet to see what kind of person they are ... i am just saying i disagree with the process .. Simple as that.

Sorry i guess i will just go hide at mofarts more often because i am not following the leader over here now! *Gets back in line.*

Hey DD, I actually don't agree with Jass on this one... But just about all his posts and his argumentative, know-it-all nature is as entertaining as it gets. Jass is opinionated and honest, that's why we have Man-Love for him.. It's better to have someone vent on MY INTERNETS, than do something in real life (like umm... beat-up their blind mom).

Honestly, I wouldn't google potential employees on the internet anyway. It's not only a tad overkill, but a bit of an invasion of privacy... Plus, you have to take most things you see on the internet with a grain of salt.

Would I hire Sally if she knew every part # for any Kia off by heart? Even if she was a practicing, openly advertised Dominatrix in her off-time (wearing a Kia hat)? Heck Yeah, but I wouldn't go looking for that information in the first place. It's none of my business.

As for posting images of my new female employees without their consent, and going on about how much business their hotness drums up... Well, it could be stalking, but more than likely, it smells of sexual harassment, which we all know is a load of shit. Women love being hot, and these girls seem to be ok with it.

I'd be careful though, cuz who knows what could happen if Jass gets on the wrong side of one of those hotties. ;)

DD, don't go to Mofarts because Jass disagrees with you and rubs your internet nose in the internet shit. Grow some danglies and give him an internet noogie :D

I didn't think Jass was trying to cause crap, nor does he seem to be pissed at you. In fact, he just relayed something that happened. You and a few others took exception so an aspect of what he did and brought it up. There's nothing wrong with that-it's not like you were disrespecftul or anything. But, he didn't roll over on the issue, so now he's a bully? I'm not sure I follow the logic there. Believe me, I've challenged him on at least one occasion, and he didn't capitulate on those things either, but neither did he get out of line.

No, I'm not running the board or being a bully. That's a load of crap, so knock it off. I've never forced anyone to leave the board. You make the accusation, I make the defense. A strong one? Perhaps. Remember, I was raised by someone whose ability to support himself and 5 other people was based on his ability to argue well. Jester's right; I'm opinionated... and a lot of thought and time goes into my opinions, and therefore I will defend them.

It's as simple as I said: I don't care what they do in their off hours as long as they're not being a public nuisance. I don't care if Sally is a dominatrix either, but you can sure enough bet I'm going to have a problem if she gets arrested for practicing it on the front lawn of the town hall.

My business is about people, and people who regularly piss off people in a small town like this ain't gonna work for me, simple as that. If it doesn't come up on Page 1 of my search, it's not worth pursuing so it's not like I spend hours chasing rumors about people, and I also take anything I find with a grain of salt regarding who posted it. If your ex-girlfriend posted something somewhere about you being a turbo-slut man-whore and half a man and I found it when you were up for employment with me, it wouldn't even register on the radar. Interpersonal conflicts are not my issue, nor are personal habits behind closed doors. I'm looking for potentially-embarrassing public behavior--and I mean things far more serious than my dance skills. :D

I don't see where that's so bad.

The reason I do this is because my ex-boss (KG) is on the chopping block, whether she knows it or not, for her behavior in the bars. She was out sluttin' it up, and a friend of mine who'd recently been fired from KG's store snapped a couple of pics with her phone and sent them to KG's (and my) boss as well as KG's boyfriend. Well, the boyfriend went ballistic and the boss was not impressed, and the boss was even less impressed when later that night KG cold-cocked Lou, knocked her on the ground, and started beating the shit out of her on a sidewalk in a busy bar district with a couple dozen witnesses. Lou didn't press charges, but everyone there knows KG is the manager of our Esky store. Is that the kind of advertising for which you'd pay? Because with KG drawing a check, that's exactly what it is.

Did Lou overstep her bounds? Perhaps, but KG should have bucked up and taken responsibility for her actions, rather than blaming Lou for a situation Lou only photographed. KG was trying to get on a happily-married customer, by the way... OK, a former customer.

That's the kind of shit I seek. I really don't care if I find a pic of a potential employee with a dick up each nostril, an opium pipe in her mouth and a grapefruit half in her ass, so long as it wasn't taken in the airport lobby. :D

Truth be known, if I were KG's boss, she'd be in the unemployment line.

Remember, my best employee dated my sister 20-some years ago. The way their relationship ended, I would just as soon kick his ass than look at his face for a long, long time because I felt he disrespected my sister. Did I fire him when I took over the store? No, in fact on my very-first day on the job, I approved a 12% raise for him and have been happy I did so ever since... I'm also happy to say that he and I are friends that hang out after work now and then. Hell, we're supposed to hang out later tonight and play demo derby with a skid-steer and my '67 Barracuda. It probably won't happen, though, because the fish won't stay running.

Oh, and for the record: I let a lady friend of mine read all of this last night. She's had some bad times of late, and some of it's online. Even though it's over, it still appears to be pending in the stuff we found. A quick call to the police should clear it up immediately, so for giggles I did it and that was the case. She was vindicated.

Guess what? Even before we called, she didn't see your point of view and actually congratulated me on being so thorough.

Obviously, it worked out well with Cathy-Lee. It will with Jodi as well.

Your points about mohawks and Mopars and Busweiser and queers, however, are some the weakest arguments I've ever seen... they're outright stupidity, in fact. How, exactly, do mohawks relate to Mopars other than having the same two letters? Should I hate Chevrolet because I dislike a guy named Chet? Realistically, if you're viewing a reach-around between gay men, you're doing it by choice so obviously you have no problem with homosexuality... so why would brand of beer have anything to do with it?

I have no problem agreeing to disagree on this whole issue; it doesn't bother me nearly as much as it apparently does you.

Oh, and your boss not looking you up on Jester's internets? He probably lied to you and told you what you wanted to hear. However, if he didn't do it before that conversation, he did do so immediately after your talk. Guaranteed.

The fact that you're still employed simply means he didn't find anything that would hurt his numbers. Good for you. :dance:
