Since its more than a high possibility I'll be going full time to college this year (no acceptence letter yet, but i set my tour date of the campus for tuesday and they schedueled a meeting with financial aid for me too....meaning that, I would've been accepted if i have to speek to financial aid cause they already have my FAFSA form info as well as their own aid form done, and they have my number, so if it was a mistake on the form they could've called me. So by proccess of elimination, i say they accepted me)
My contiplation is vehicles. Keeping the D100, thats a givin, its going to sit cause i'll be a broke-ass college student, but its going to be my project after schools done. But for a vehicle to keep on campus, two choices, my Neon, or my Dakota. Both are old, the neons a 95 and needs a new gas tank and fuel pump. The Dakota's a 93, just fixed the clutch and slave master cylinders (more like bought new ones), but the clutch itself is wearing out, and the brake lines could go in a year....plus it doesn't pass emissions (though its registered by my parents place, which is a non-emisions area).
With school: I will be living and working (preferdly) on campus while going to school, so comuting is going to be at its minimum, next to none. And parking is free, there are no fee's, as long as i park where the students are designated too, i got no problems there.
Neon will get better gas milage, I know that and the price currently for gas here is $2.86 for regular low-ball 87. But to fix the fuel problem (if it IS only the tank and pump....but more than likely it will be new lines and filter, just to be safe), will be a minimum of $250 (that includes shipping on the tank and pump, and some rubberized under coating for the tank before it gets installed). Plus the transmission is a little sketchty (ATx), my friend noticed it sometimes "slips" when driving in gear :doubt: (gotta love those cheaply made ATX's) So who knows about that. Exhaust system is going too, and I have no idea when was the last time he did a tune up on it (his dad is an SAE certified mechanic, but he wanted my friend to be able to learn how to take care of his own car, so his dad did the tune up when they first bought it. But it was up to my friend to continue it....and he hasn't)
The Dakota, gets about 20 to 22 mph, not bad for a truck, and would be a little bit of a plus in winter (though only 2wd and has next to no weight in the back, can be remidied by sand bags) if I did need to venture out into the frozen tundra. The brake lines I checked, they're getting to the point where it'd be sketchy if they'd hold up to another panic stop (I, unfortunetly,
hit someones loose dog out by my parents place out in the country. I hit the brake pedal so hard the pressure blew open a rear line. I still had enough pressure and fluid to get me home....but thank god for good old manual transmission and engine breaking.) But over all, despite the worn clutch, everything still works as it should, the tranmission leaks a bit (need to make a new TOP gasket) but not much, and my radiator drain cock leaks a bit cause, either i did, or when it got the truck fixed at the dealer (some one, might have been me) the plastic threading is striped a bit from going in a little sideways, so i drips here and there too, not much. And maybe some new back tires for winter too
But I have done regular oil changes, and tune ups on it, plus it has new top end gaskets (plus it is now a true roller motor thanks to Chevy LOL). New exhaust, just rusty and trusty to a point. But over the years I've went into a little debt trying to keep it breathing some days in the past cause it was my only ride (i'd walk to work, but it was 30 miles away)
Both of them have their share of rust, the truck more since its the oldest and most used. The neon has rust on the corner of the hood and the corner of the truck lid. I know one of these days I'll have to sell one (or both), and I'm personaly attached to the truck cause its been with me since highschool and I've got some good memories from it (and in it  ) And If i some how feel on some more money, both could be fixed up quickly.
So, any opinions? I know the option of non, but they lock you out of your dorms on the holidays and breaks (unless you are an exchange student), so I'd need some way to get to my parents place 3 hours away. Any words of wisedom (or lack there of :toot
are welcome. Just want to know what you guys would do.
