Might be getting back one of my old cars...

Drowning deep in my sea of loathing...so I'm
This is the one car I restored with virtually no expense spared.

I sold it back around 2000/2001 when we had one young child and second on the way, so the car reluctantly went up for sale to pay off dept so we could afford our first home.

Fast forward to around March 2020 when I was doing a random internet search for something and a pic of a car came up...I looked at it and thought this might be my old car. I did a reverse search on the image and found a small buy/sell website with an expired ad for the car...and it sure did look like my car.

So I have been posting want ads on that site, as well as on the local area Kijiji and Craigslist every now and then for the last couple years. Well a guy called me out of the blue last week who said he has the car, and it turns out it is the same fellow who bought the car from me 20+ years ago! And he is willing to sell the car.

He says it's been in a heated garage this whole time and he's put maybe a couple thousand miles on it. He said the only thing that has been replaced was the fuel tank, fuel pump, filter and carb from gumming up from sitting. Other then that he claims that there is not a single scratch or ding that wasn't on the car when I sold it....pics will confirm this claim.

I never thought I would see the car again to be honest, and so I have been looking for a 71 Superbee for a year or so now, but to have the opportunity to acquire this car again after so many years, along with the associated memories and lessons and experience I learned while restoring it is priceless, and an opportunity this will likely not come my way again.

I received a bunch of pics of the car today and it is as he stated, it has not changed much at all in all this time. Little more dust and grime on the motor from small valve cover leaks etc, but over all I can't see any major deterioration in the car.👍

That's a pretty rare opportunity. I'd kill for my old Challenger back, but I'm pretty sure it's been soup cans for 20 years now.

I remember you mentioning this car at some point over the years... this and the Road Runner. They're (or were) both very nice cars.

Big block with HP manifolds... it's just a fact of life. 😁

Yeah it was a loaded up car for the day, I added the 150 mph speedo at the time since I had one or two, and of course the upgrade to the R/T-Superbee hood. And due to my height I installed a 6 way manual adjustable seat mechanism as well.

I actually found my old 73 340 Roadrunner last year, but the current owner was in the middle of restoring it and was not interested in selling it.

Would appreciate some advice.

While taking to the guy he mentioned that he would like to have payment in cold hard cash! Now I have done the math on going to get the car myself and there is no way I could do the trip for less then having it transported. So not sure how to pay in cash other then to fly in pay for the car then fly home...but since he's the one who wants cash, not a bank to bank transfer or other secure payment method, I feel it would not be unreasonable to ask him to flip the bill for a round trip plane ticket.

I will be talking to him in the next day or so about this so perhaps he'll have a sugegstion or we can come to some other arrangement.

meet him in the middle of the plane ticket, he eats half the round trip costs.., you hvae no issuses paying cash in hand but its not like you can fly in and drive it home....or can you?

Thanks 69...This is one option to consider. I probably could drive it home, I'd have to get a new set of tires put on since it's still wearing the tires I put on 25 years ago! and it's a LONG way away so then the cost of fuel, meals and hotel stays would probably be more then transport on an open carrier.

do you really want to trust a VERT on a OPEN carrier?

ive seen some spooky images from a freind of mine who still drives truck

actualy..i may have a guy, he transported the alfa to the east, not sure if he deals with border crossings tho, lemmy know if you want his info, he was real nice and exceptionaly carefull

I hadn't thought of anything going particularly bad with a convertible on an open carrier...now you have me a bit worried. 😳

Sure send me his info...worth a call.

Spoke with the guy today about my old coronet and we've agreed on a price! Have lots of logistics to sort out but at least we can start moving forward, So getting closer to being mine again.

He did say that he wasn't completely ready to sell the car and had turned down offers the last couple years, but when he saw that I was looking for it he thought that who else would appreciate the car as much as him if not the fellow who restored it! So that is why he contacted me...👍

Thanks Stretch...Yeah wife and family is pretty excited as well!

When speaking with him recently I asked if he still had all the pics and camcorder tapes that I sent him after he bought the car....he said he does which is awesome because there were 5-6 pics that I received of the car from the 70-80's. As well as all the pics and vids on the resto of the car.

I've also decided that I want to fly out and meet the guy who's looked after the car all these years, as well as get some pics with the two of us and the car, and any stories/pics to add to the coronets story so far.

the fact that you have info from BEFORE you got it, and he still has everything you gave him with it..it would actualy be very shameful to NOT fly out and spend some time with the guy, i mean lets face it..its blind dumb luck to even find a car you once sold..let alone have it in good condition...the fact the owner is willing to let you have it back is just a single needle in a million haystacks

I agree the odds of me seeing that pic, finding the old for sale ad, and then after a couple years of want ads he contacts me willing to sell the car is just amazing this actually happened!

So been trying to sort out the cash payment and things are not going as I had hoped.

I deal with a large national bank and figured I could give them a couple weeks notice and just set up the cash withdrawal at one of their local banks in his area of the country, then fly in and go to the bank and pick up the money....but it turns out that they are not keen on this for the simple fact that I'm not from the "area" and they are hesitant to release those kinds of funds because of this.
:(

I have been a customer for over 30 years with this bank, you wouldn't think that this would even be an issue.

they are covering their ass, its fairly common, and, a big chunk of change im sure, best thing i could tell you to do would be to take the maximum you can with you and then pickup the rest localy, i know i wouldnt want to travel with it either but at the same time....i wouldnt want to get there and not be able to pull anything cause i come from out of town
