Lets discuss thermoquads

I just can't bring myself to use JB weld.

I know there are guys who claim to have JB welded a broken engine block together, then proceeded to throw a 500 shot of nitrous on it and race it for 10 seasons without a problem.

But our experience with JB weld has been putting a tiny blop of it on an old metal pipe in the basement as a band aid before replacing it and it leaked through within a month. :shifty::D

For simply plugging an egr hole in a manifold, it would probably be perfect. I've never used it on a block, but I did use it in a last ditch desperate attempt to avoid pulling a head off to drill an exhaust stud out. What happened is, I had a /6 with a broken-off exhaust stud at the very back of the head. Without removing the manifold, I drilled a hole in the stud and then ran a cheap easy out into it...which of course snapped off in the stud. But, it didn't quite plug the pilot hole I had drilled, the hole that had gone all the way to the end of the broken-off stud. Guess what was at the other end of the stud? Yep-COOLANT. So, I now had a broken stud with a broken easy out in it, dribbling coolant.

I did what any self respecting hack would do-slapped a glob of jb weld on it and prayed. It never leaked a drop again.

Hey Jass! How are the Autovalue carb kits for these T-quads? Can you recommend anything else I need before I get the rebuild kit?

The PartsMaster brand kits are pretty good; they're relabeled Borg-Warner. They're cheaper than the Standard branded kits, and the Standard/Hygrade kits are a little more universal. If you've got the phenolic floats, I'd replace them. If you've got brass, I'd float-test them and if they don't have fluid inside, reuse them.

Hint: never mind the damned application. Give the counter guy the carb number. If he can't find it that way, he needs to get more familiar with the Hygrade and/or PartsMaster books.

Also, these carbs are old and have been worked over the years... make sure your top plate matches the bowl, and that matches the throttle body. I've had several mix-n-match TQs over the years that used major component parts from three different carbs, and the previous owners couldn't figure out why they wouldn't run correctly. :D
