Just picked up a 68 300....

Drowning deep in my sea of loathing...so I'm
Came across this car a week or so ago, mostly complete 68 300 2dr with a 440/auto, power drums brakes, power windows, rear defogger. Guy was selling it cheap...$650 cdn for the car, but no registration or papers.

Thought it would be a good parts car for my 68 T/C wagon, and perhaps the whole front end will end up on the wagon one day to make a 68 300 wagon...;)

So loaded up the truck, hooked to my trailer and made the 5 hour drive one way to go get the car. This is how I found it when I arrived...

Guy used a big forklift to drag it out, he was going to drop it onto my trailer but I could see damage happening that way so I said I would swap on some rims and tires I brought with me and use my 10 ton chain drive come-a-long to drag it up onto the trailer. He said he'd lift it with the fork lift and then used his big cordless impart to spin off all the lug nuts for me...super cool of him since that would have taken me at least an hour to do by hand.

He then placed it with the front wheels on the back of my trailer to save me some more time, then I used my come-a-long to drag it up the rest of the way.

And ready to head home...

Guy thinks the motor is locked up, I have not tried to move it yet...

Had already cleaned out a huge box of old crumpled up newspapers and other debris from inside....

When he dragged it out all but the RH front wheel started to turn, so spent some time working of get that drum off and moving.

Found another use for the old 1940's-50's drum puller I bought when I had my 48 Desoto...

Took a lot of hammering, and pressure from the puller to get that drum free...

Got it all put back together and now it will roll around.

Sorting and cleaning today...

Saw this on the drivers side rear spring mount...guess it was towed out of a ditch maybe and tore the frame boxing apart.

Fender tag is present and in great shape, and I even found a mint build sheet!

Guess all that newspaper inside the car gave the critters lots of nesting material and they left the build sheet alone....:) I haven't decoded the fender tag or build sheet yet, but the numbers all match.

Over all the car is in really good shape, minimal rust and damage. Pretty happy with the car.

Looks to be surprisingly solid. Shame that there's no paperwork. Few of those old 300's have survived the demolition derby guys. A good catch "Larger than Stretch Dude".

That's still one of my favorite C-bodies. Once upon a time I lusted for one, though those days are behind me now. It definitely looks like you got a good deal on it, whe'er your intented deeds upon it be good or evil.

maybe dragging it across the border could fix it.....honestly it looks WAY too solid to use as a parts car...4drs are parts cars 2drs are keepers

It really is a solid car for it's age. Trunk is darn nice, and other then the pass side rear quarter rust above the wheel well and the same lower quarter bent up, it's a darn solid car. Lots of bumps and bruises and a little fender crunch...but all easier to fix then major rust.

I did think about that 69....bring it across the border to some state that will register a car with just a bill of sale. ;)

honestly..with the price you paid, as clean as it is..and the fact that so few remain....i would seriously consider it

Nice save.
I love those 300s almost as much as the '69 300s, and that one looks incredibly solid.
If you part it out, and have the space to not be in a rush, you should be able to easily make some decent coin off the parts.

After pressure washing the motor last week I figured it was time to check it out and see if the old 440 was locked up or not.

I pulled the valve covers to make sure no critters over the years had made nests, or used the valve train as a storage facility....

Nice and clean with only a couple valve stem seal pieces to be found.

Popped out the dizzy to check inside the motor...again everything looked really clean, no sludge build up or gunk anywhere. So I pulled the plugs...all old Champion plugs. Then used a small hose and poured diesel into each cylinder and let that sit 24 hours. Just an hour ago was the big moment, would the motor be locked up, kind of rough to roll over, or spin nice and easy? Hooked up my grandfather old craftsman 3/4" drive ratchet and extension and a 1 1/4 socket and gave it a yank...spun super clean and easy!! 👍

Only moved it maybe 45* on the crank, I want to change the oil and filter then prime the motor before continuing to roll it over. Then it will be swap in a spare rad and hoses, hook up the water pump pulley and fan, spare carb and dizzy and then some fuel line from a gas can to the fuel pump and see if I can get the old beast to fire!
