Ever mig welded a sump in a gas tank? It's hard to get it leak-free. I have no IDEA why it's so hard-it'll leak from the damndest places. By the time I got done welding in a sump in a buddy's mustang tank, it looked like a blind monkey had welded it with a box of matches. I'll charge a good bit for doing that again.

my guess is the galvanization on and in the tank that makes it a biotch....sadly im probably makeing my own tank for the lloyd and the 70 CS

i had a fire truck in the shop last week with a leaking fuel tank. took the tank off & it was beyond repair. took it to a fabricator i know & he made me up an aluminum replacement tank in about 3 hours.(even welded in baffles) the welds looked like smooth spead butter. somethings are easy if you do it for a living..

Yeah, but he tiged it most likely. Whole different kettle of fish there. My welds generally look pretty good, but when you have to keep piling layer upon layer to get it to seal there comes a point where it just starts looking bad.

i grind mine down smooth and it theres an issue i re weld the line and grind again till its flawless

For thin metal applications like sumps & pan I prefer to braze them, the brass flows out to prevent pinholes.;)

I've modified several oil sumps and pans with nary a leaker.:giggedy:

In a world of fancy mig and tig welders tis an art seldom seen anymore, brings back childhood memories with dad in the garage.....*sniff*

Well, it sure sounds like brazing would have been the ideal way to handle this. I had to do a fair amount of snipping and bending to get the sump to follow the contours of the tank reasonably well, and I still ended up with some gaps to fill with the welder. I bet brazing would have involved adding much less metal to stop leaks after the first test.

Well, it's done now. Hopefully it'll never leak again-I don't want to hear it if it does.

Braze it in!!!!!!!

finish it with BONDO and don,t tell the car ---it won,t know the difference--- clean it down really good and sand it and brush it then put the plastic to it or use bondo with fiber.it works - never had a complaint - paint it black and call it a day er tank sorry---ORVIL from the busted knuckle garage----Repair or Dispair under one roof
