I Need Some Transfer Case Help!

Hiding In The Bushes While
My brother just bought a '74 Power Wagon and the transfer case jumps out of low range and it skips under any kind of load.

Mostlikly the little truck has the chain driven case ans it's shot, he would like to change the case to a gear driven one.

I pulled this number off his case, C-11890, which case is this?

Which number is the gear driven case?

Are there rebuild kits/parts for any of these cases.

Can really drive it anywhere now.:doubt:

Is the front driveshaft still installed? lock in the hubs and see what happens, if its a full time new process it will pop and bang all over the place until you have it in double nut. The one in my 75 has been like that for 10 years. If I spin out I just reach down and hold it in and then the rears grab and its off to the races again. I know its not right but until it spits parts out on the ground Im gonna keep beatin it.

The front DS is in there but it don't have hubs.

It's a full time newprocess (please explain to be sure) but..... What!?:wtf:

yup thats a chain unit...and putting a new chain in it isnt such bad thing....

i dont think you can go to a gear unit without swaping the front to haveing hubs...but i could be wrong

Thats how came out with a castle nut showing and there is a locking hub conversion kit available similar to a ford ranger setup, mine has them but without the kit in the transfer case you have to leave them turned in. Jack up one in the front and one in the back and turn the wheels with it in gear and listen to where its jumping at. Might be bad splines or spiders also.:hmmm:

I chained the sucka to a tree and got bro to try and pull it down and when it started to skip the front driveshaft stopped turning.

Well that pretty much narrows it down to front drive chain Im afraid. I have a gear drive in my 68 P- wagon and they are noisy but stout as hell. A 205 should drop right in your bros and unless you plan on mud boggin it on a daily basis will give many years of trouble free service behind a small block. Unless you beat the crap out of stuff like I do and then you better look for a gear drive, I believe they are non-married only.:hmmm:

yes the gear IS a non married unit..meaning you would definatly need to change out the tailshaft houseing but i belive it a diferent transmision all together...also your drivelines would have to be changed as well since the x-case is about 8?inches further back...as for the chain durability..my ramcharger got well...alot of abuse 4 low on dry payment is lots of fun :P and i put ALOT of abuse milage on a fresh chain and havnt stretched it yet with a rather stout 360 and 3500stall shiftkited as well but only on 33's

had someone tell me that the chains were a weak link too...but after rebuilding the case i got a spare new chain..that been sitting in the box for several years now

Where does one get parts for a NP-203?:helpme:

Would it help if I took a picture of that underside of this truck?

Got this off 'Farts.

In my 74 W100 the NP205 transfercase is the divorced version. The xfercase is mounted to the frame and has a short (under a foot) driveshaft between it and a short tailshaft 727. I think all 72-74s were this way. Starting with the 75 models the NP203 xfercase bolted directly to the transmission. A NP205 is all gears and a NP203 has the drivechain.

Off to Napa.

I have seen NOS 203s cheep ( guess USAF had some) I built my last one and it worked well, there seams to be 2 versions of the spider gears housing if yours are bad pull some from junk yard the HD part is clearly heaver.... Good luck

normaly i would agree mr340 but around here the 4x4 shops generaly suck at stocking repair parts ..i was able to get the chain and gear thru them but they couldnt even find a part# for the gasket set

Good point, here on the east coast there are a lot of dedicated 4x4 shops, going into napa looking for transfer case internals might make Chad the (parts counter guy on spring preak from Princeton University) start crying.

I find the mere idea that there might be such a thing as a dedicated 4X4 shop in the backwoods of Saskatchewan - particularily DW's part of it rather entertaining... :D

You know it man, out here in the boondocks where the 4x4 is king, there is not one damn repair/parts shop here.:D

Just one in Yorkton that only does driveshafts.:doubt:

He musta been the same guy we asked about the 440 gasket set.:doubt:

Ok was talking to a friend of mine and he says that they made both kinds of transfer cases for married and divorced units.

So he's gonna sell me one of the gear driven married units he has! :giggedy:
