Arecent statement by Sergio Marchionne, claiming that “most of the fleet” will have hybrid variants by 2023, may indicate that the companyis further ahead with hybrid technology than it has let on.
Until recently, hybrid-electric powerplants were not popular in the types of vehicles most customers buy from Chrysler, Dodge, or Jeep. Toyota itself, first mass-market producer of hybrid-electric cars, has had little success in North America with its own hybrid SUVs. In addition, low fuel prices haveresulted inmost customers not caring as much about fuel economy.
