How NOT to do body work

restoman

The paint fumes have cleared so I'm
A customer brought me this Merc that he just finished spending a lot of money on, to try and straighten it out.
Take a gander at the pics. It makes me almost sick, to see this kind of crap!
The story goes - he took it to me just before my shop closed, obviously I wasn't in a position to help him out at that time. So, to another bodyshop it went, to sit un-touched for most of the winter. The owner's patience ran out, he paid the minor bill at that shop and took it to someone who had bugged him for years for some work. He got an estimate (nothing on paper, sadly), they did some work, then demanded some more money in order to finish the car.
Now, keep in mind, I've worked for this guy many times in the past, money is NOT an obstacle for him. As long as he gets what he wants, he's happy to pay the bill.
This Merc is also a Southwest US car, with very little rust, and the owner brought it to them totally disassembled, sitting on a rolling cart. That's the way he operates - he puts them back together himself.
So, the owner agrees to pay the extra $$$, providing the car is the way he wants it when he picks it up.
When he gets the call to "come pick it up, it's done", he dispatches his son in the company flatbed, and heads out to meet him at the bodyshop.
Now the price is almost double the second estimated amount, and the shop insists on payment before he loads the car. Some words were exchanged, harshly, I'm sure.
Long of it is, the car leaves on the flatbed, and not one penny more than the second estimate was paid.

It sits in a trailer for a month while emotions settle, then it comes to me.

It's frick' horrible! I've seen smoother sheetmetal after a demo derby. The paint has that really thick, orange-peely, run infested look to it. Crooked paint lines, over spray throughout, no seam sealer anywhere. exposed welds wherever any welding had to be done. yadda, yadda, yadda....

Take a peek at the pics. I don't know how someone could do this kind of work and look at themselves in the mirror.
Filler over rust, at least 6 seperate coats of primer, it was sprayed white then some more primer was applied with filler put on top of the primer (likely because it was too wavy), several areas had at least a full 1/2" of filler, fender skirts that were not fitted, expensive Glasurit base coat topped with cheap clear, runs, .....
I can use the money, but fixing this kind of stuff is fast becoming un-fun!

Dear god!! You just nailed it. That's precisely why I don't do bodywork for anyone any more. I don't blame you for getting out. Run away!:shifty:

Holy Judas, that's just piss poor :( I worked a couple years in a really good body shop on the west coast, got to work on a lot of older stuff, and can still remember a few of the things I learned. The stuff in your pics definitely ain't any of them.

Mud Puppy!

Wow. Just...........wow. Talk about "body man in a can". I don't envy you on this one Resto. You're definitely gonna have a serious case of "Popeye Arms" by the time you get done massaging that tin. [smilie=f:

Yeah, that's pretty awful. So, does this fellow have any kind of recourse on this? Is this a legit auto body place that he went to? If so, I think I'd be takin' that guy to court! Call Judge Judy!!

No. His wife wanted to sue their asses off, but he figured he'd just pay the money and move on. Remember, no paperwork on this car.
The bodyshop (it was kinda sorta legit) closed immediately after he picked up the Merc and is supposedly now under new ownership.

thats insane?!?!?!?!!??!...now how about some ful body shots..that looks like a sexy merc...potentialy

That kinda work looks a little too familiar.... :hmmm:

Well,ya know YOU can fix it up right, but I guess you're wondering if you want to or not, eh?

Well me too, only my own cars, but in my defense I think that guy put more bondo on one panel than I used on my whole car & I did actually fix the metal before I put any putty on.
A guy did that to charger mans fenders, sent em up to conneticut pd 5 K for metal work & got back 2 gals of putty over untouched metal!
At least I know what I did to my car & didn't pay big bucks to get back a worse shitty job I did. :shifty: Rich.

Under all that filler was...

some seriously wrinkled sheetmetal.

4 hours of picking, filing and shrinking and it's at the point where a couple skims of filler will make it all purty again.
I could have spent much more time on the metal work, but considering the amount of previous hammering, welding and grinding done to this panel, I'm not sure how much better it would ever get. :(
A lot of the damage was done by who ever welded the trim holes and the patch over the wheelwell. Warped it all to Hell, they did.

looks like she got crunched hard a LONG time ago...looks pretty good tho..but im sure the pic's hide alot

More work than I wanted to do...

I got the passenger side in polyester primer, ready for long boarding. It looks very good, of course. :)
Took a razor blade to the top of the driver's quarter to see how thick the paint material was. The panel looked not too bad, and I was hoping to be able to block out most of the waviness, without getting into striping and repairing the panel, like the other side.

:(

Take a look at the pics.
No adhesion of any kind. The razor wasn't even needed, once the paint was broken. Some pieces came off in sheets about 10"x10".

I was hoping to be able to just repair and refinish the basic shell - colour match permitting - but now I'm thinking I have to advise the owner to strip and re-do ALL the panels. A stone chip in this paint could be catostrophic, and if it happened after the car was re-assembled..............

Shitty work like this really pisses me off. [smilie=l:
