when did they change the alts from the "wide" fin to the as we know them narrow fin?

The only ones I've ever seen were high-output aftermarket ones. Maybe someone decided that the OEM 35 amp wasn't doing the job. :huh:

why have i never seen the "wide" fin before..like ever....and i dig the way it looks compared to the narrow fins

1962. That's the original 1960 design, introduced on the new Slant Six Valiant. It was the first automotive use of an alternator and rated at 30A. It was used in '61 as well, but the additional cooling fins were added in 1962. It's a very hard alternator to find, as most were replaced at some point with the newer design, which is a bolt-in.
 
I like that body style, but the front end doesn't really work for me. I prefer the 62 Newyorker wagon.;)
