Good Guy Alert: 440Source.com

Livin' my life...one gas station at a time.
Talk about timing. I've been giving BB71 some pointers about the rocker arms recently for his engine since I had already looked for and found a nice set for mine. I referred him to the place I got mine and pointed out the ones they had there (and the prices:cool: ) to pick from.

A few minutes ago got a phone call from 440Source about the Stainless rocker arms I bought from them. They told me that the manufactuer (sp?) of the rocker arms just redesigned the adjuster screws for two reasons.
1) They were a little thin where the allen wrench went in (not much metal left for the threads) because of the size of the allen slot they had chosen.
2) They have had some issues with the adjuster screws breaking when being tightened. The found them to be a bit hard which made them somewhat brittle and prone to snapping if overtorqued.

The fix was that they made the allen size smaller to allow more material for the threads and changed the heat treatment process to make the screws less hard (brittle) and at the same time gave them more toughness.

The shocker? (no not THAT shocker [smilie=2: LOL!) They wanted to know if I wanted the free set of updated replacement screws sent to the same address as the original order. That was the first time I've ever had a company call me back and tell me their stuff was updated and just wanted to make sure I had the best stuff they had to offer without trying to sell me the "better" part.

This phone call just confirms the impression I've gotten from dealing with these guys before. They are genuinely a Mopar shop for Mopar guys first. The buisness part of it is just how they get the job done.

BTW: No, this is not a paid endorsement. However, I wouldn't turn down any SWAG if they happened to offer any though:dance:

i noticed that the adjustment screws and lock nuts were the only things that did not resemble the comp cams roller rockers. glad that they are offering free upgrades. if you do a search and bring up the comp cams and the 440source parts they are virtually identical to each other except for the little comp cams logo inside on the top of the rocker and the set screws.

It confirms to me that they are the place to do business with. I am pretty sure that is where I am going to get my stroker kit.

I have a feeling they are Cats but as long as they bushed them they should be fine. I had a set of Cat SS rollers seize on the shafts and put 2 valves into pistons on my 408 stroker. I fixed the engine and bought the Comp stainless and there was a 1000% difference in quality. Half the Cat adjusters couldn't even fit an allen wrench. Had to jam some of them in.:dgt:
I'll pay the difference and get the Comps but I do plan on buying my stroker kit from 440source if that's the way I go.:hmmm:

did you hear of anyone else having trouble with them? what quality issues did they have?

They were unbushed which made them seize after less than 20 minutes. The adjusters were lousy. I don't know if 440source rocker arms are Cats but they were the only other brand that had the SS rollers that look exactly like Comps(until you look close). I'll spend the $200. difference now instead of maybe thousands later. I plan on contacting 440source so I'll ask him who makes them.

Just my personal experience.:wtf:

OK from what Ive heard the cat stuff isnt that great. In fact Ive heard NOTHING good about them. Supposedly one of the *fixes* is to install the rocker shafts UP SIDE DOWN so the oil holes are up. Makes a resivour out of the shaft and gives more wear surface to the rockers. Let me know how things go, if they pan out I will be suprised.:dgt:

A member on another site had the same problems with the unbushed SS rockers that Russ had.....They Seized. The resulting damge was bent valves and fubarred pistons. The total repair bill for a $200.00 rocker arm "savings" ended up being close to 2 grand when all was said and done !

Personally, i wouldn't use them....who knows if the ratios are accurate or even consistent from one rocker arm to the next in the same set. The Crane Ductile iron is a proven performer and reasonably priced. On a mild street build you won't see any power improvement with a roller over a non roller rocker arm. If you really want a roller use a quality piece like Comp or Harland Sharp. I have the Harland's in mine, fwiw.

Well I lucked out, the guy who ported my Eddy's had an extra set of valves from a head he did and the piston(s) only had a small nick so I just smoothed it down. He drove 4 hours both ways to help me, he lapped the new valves in, we checked the degree on the cam slapped the top end back together and had it running that day.
Didn't charge me a dime!! Wouldn't even let me cover his gas![smilie=2:
If you ever need small block Mopar heads ported then use Ryan at Shady Dell Speed Shop, he's the best!!

I'd have to double check mine or call them and ask to be 100% but I belive mine were bushed when I got them. The shape of the adjuster nose looks different then the 440Source ones too. Mine look meatier all the way around compared to the pics of your Cat ones. If mine somehow are Cat rockers, then it seems they may have made a 180 on their design engineering and quality control.

Did those aluminum shaft hold downs come with the Cat kit? Mine came with a more traditional type heavy stamped steel pieces.

I also didn't get any skinny spacers like you have there. 440Source does have those in stock if I need them to move the arms around to center the rollers on the valve tips. I need to get my heads machined a little first to get some clearance for the arms and that's when I'll go ahead and center the arms using the shims.

Please keep in mind that I started this thread based on the quality of the service and the appearance to the parts I received from 440Source. If I have any problems with anything I've bought from them I belive they will back up their products based on they way they have dealt with me in the past (and present). ;)

I bought the shims and the hold downs separate. I had a bunch of the spacer shims left, if I didn't give em to Cuda buyer.:doubt: I'll look and send em to you if I still have them.:wtf:

Cool!

I'll give you a holler when I get ready to finish them up.

Ok, but don't hold your breath, I gave him boxes of crap when he picked the car up.:bahh:
