My dad and i are currently trying to start a mopar restoration business.WE have come across a 1970 challenger 440/6pck,shaker hood, pistol grip, dana 60 car.The guy says it's all original. He's asking $20,000.00 for it.It needs to be put back together but it's all there.I've been told this is a very very rare car.And i can get at least 80 out of it with a little work.Is this a good buy???How many were made like this???What should it bring in good condition???I don't know antthing about e-bodys so help me out please [smilie=e:

Nope. It's as common as a 318 Coronet.

Can I have his number please? [smilie=e:

Seriously, I'm sure a 440 6pk Shaker 4-speed car for 20K is a great deal if all is there - no matter what the condition.

The big bucks will come if you do the full resto with the factory paint daubs and grease pencil markings..

$80K when done? Yeah. I could see that happening.

As for production numbers, there were only 1640 R/T 2-door hardtop Challengers with the 440-6pk engine.
(296 SEs had that engine as did 99 Convertibles)

I don't know of a breakdown by trannies from there but it's safe to assume it much less than 1640.

For something like this it might be worth having an expert look into it before purchasing it.

Any Shaker-hood Challenger is worth a pretty penny... they had problems with those hoods and they're far less common than they were on 'Cudas. Legend has it some Shaker-optioned cars were built with the T/A hood, but I don't recall ever seeing a documented version... anyone else?

Build numbers by the 4-speed:
  • 847 standard R/T coupes were built with the 440-6 engine.

135 R/T coupes with said engine were assembled with the SE package (not included in the other 847).

61 R/T convertibles with that drivetrain were assembled.

To get the multi-carb big-block, you absolutely had to specify an R/T, so there were no base Challengers or non-R/T SEs built with it.
Regardless of the condition, the car's worth the asking price if it's complete. You lose some on non-numbers-matching drivetrain, but it's still a desirable car...

Remember: a VIN swap is as easy as changing the dash pad on an E-car. If there's no data tags or build sheets, be sure all the stamped body numbers check out with the dash VIN, and check for convertible/HP-car torque boxes, or you could wind up with a very-expensive 318 car.

The legit seller usually has good documentation to go along with everything else. Galen's great if you can convince him to get around to your stuff... my friend Paul's been waiting almost two years for GG to decode and give him production numbers on his '68 Hemi Road Runner.

Peed on yourself again Beep? The damp bunny slippers making the "squishy squishy" sounds as you walk gave it away. [smilie=e:

S'okay I didn't either
If you never came here, or you spend too much time sitting in a living room when you did... ain't nothin' I can do for ya. :D [smilie=e:

[smilie=e: Really?

He's the third owner and has had the car since 1976... the first owner had the car less than a year, and the second bought it for the drivetrain (which he put in a Dart) so he never really drove it. It was never hit and never crashed, and it's an early '68 (Inland-shifted car) so it's not like it was built near model-year switch-over. You're the first person to mention it, including the judges at the Mopar Nats.

I can't tell the difference... how does one tell a '68 Road Runner bumper from a '69?

68 69 Ply. B body frt. bumper's are identical, even the 68 part #'s for the marker lites/lenses were carried thru '69,,the rears are identical too except the b/up lites on the 69's...nuthin' on '68,,,that's a nice lookin' Hemi car !!

Well I stand corrected if Im wrong Dr, but the last 68 coronet 500 I sold had round front turn sigs in the bumper so thats what I was going by. Mabeye thats a 500 only thing. The 69 500 rag I had had a bumper like the runner. [smilie=e: [smilie=e:

Ah--see, you're thinking Dodge, Marc. The Dodges used a round turn signal 1968-69, where the Plymouths used that low rectangular design...
