For under 10 grand, what can be had in the long run?

MM, there are millions of the 2x4 4.0.
Just few in our area. Florida alone seems to poop them daily.

Yeah there's a few 2x4 4.0L around on E-bay but he's looking for a 5-speed. Around here, the only 2x4's are 4-poppers, including the one my folks have.

If you get the newer ones, they're not supposed to be too bad. I know the one in my parents' ('86) was replaced in '92 or '93 and it still has a hard time getting into 2nd gear in the cold.
 
What's wrong with the old ones? Are the gears as slippery as a banana peel on the gym floor?
 
No, the trannys grenade. I think they were peugot trannys? Been awhile since I did the Jeep thing. ;)
