The U.S. House of Representatives’ Energy and Commerce Committee is considering a law that would give automakers a break in fuel economy targets if they usecrash avoidancesystems, trading off environmental and national security concerns for a lighter roadway death toll.
The changes would also make recalls stricter, by requiring recall notifications to be emailed as well as mailed, andexplained to drivers when they renew their state registrations; and by demanding that suppliers provide regulators with listsof their faultyparts.
The bill would alsohelp toreduce hacking and use of private customer data, by making automakers have policies on the use of car-owner data; creating an auto cyber-security council to create best practices; and making it illegal to hack vehicle data and systems, with civil penalties up to $100,000 (these may backfire by making it harder for third-party researchers to expose holes before criminals do).
