Whenthe Chevrolet Cruze arrived with a diesel engine supplied by a division ofFiat Chrysler Automobiles, many slammed FCA for not putting a diesel into the Dart.
The last laugh was on Chevy, though, as fuel prices plummeted and demand for the Cruze diesel seems to have evaporated. The2016Cruze, due this fall, will come without the diesel option — at least until 2017, when GM claims it will have a 1.6 liter diesel from GM Europe.
Cruze will use a 153 turbocharged 1.4, like the Dart does (160 hp), for around 40 mpg; it will also have a stop-start system. A non-turbo 1.5 liter engine will also be around, for 113 hp.
Volkswagen has done well selling diesel-powered cars, but it appears Americans are not yet ready for an American-made small car powered with theefficient but expensive,high-torque but low-horsepower engines. (...) →
