OK, here's the deal... because I'm a twisted individual with excess speed parts lying around and this cute little 138,000-mile '85 318HP shorblock sitting innocently in the corner, the decision has been made to find its limits.

I'm all aboot the carnage, see.

Here's the combo:
  • 1985 318HP (cop) shortblock, fresh hone, original bore, pistons, and rods w/ARP bolts
  • 8.9:1 compression (creative milling and thin head gaskets w/truly-flat flat-tops)
  • Fresh Clevite 77 bearings (stock replacements--nothing fancy)
  • File-fit moly rings
  • Iron 1973 340 crankshaft (only using because it's drilled for the 4-speed)
  • Stock oil pump and pickup
  • 340 windage tray
  • Double-row roller timing set
  • Mopar Performance 276°/.490" solid-lifter camshaft
  • 3/8" pushrods
  • Ported 1972 J-casting 360 heads, 1.925"/1.625" titanium valves, titanium locks and retainers, Lunati springs, and ductile-iron adjustable rockers
  • Weiand tunnel ram w/matched 600 Holleys, choke towers removed, K&N StubStacks, Holley red pump
  • Dual-pickup vacuum-advance distributor w/3°-4° retard @ RPM yet to be determined
  • MSD 6AL or Crane HI-6 ignition (haven't bought it yet), Accel 300+ wires
  • Wrapped 1-5/8" headers, 3" collectors, 2½" X-pipe into DynoMax turbos, 2½" tailpipes all the way out
  • 4.56 or 5.13 gears (depending on my mood that day)
  • A-833OD aluminum case transmission
  • Stock-style clutch (though higher capacity)
  • 28"x19" truck radiator, 3-row, stock AC water pump, no power steering pump to worry aboot
Plan is to set the rev limiter at 8,000RPM. One would think I'm suicidal, but Stretch is gonna drive. :D Any drivetrain or accessory failures will be rectified so that Big McLargehuge can have another crack at the engine. :dance:

The question at hand is this: tell me where you think the fuse is... that is, what's going to come apart and catastrophically fail this engine?

Please keep in mind, a spun bearing is not a catastrophic failure until something else gives up the ship.

I had to go Peter Pan, but i think that will also add to the total extinction of the block, and the inner fender, and the brakes, and the wheel, and the hubcap, and the poodle peeing on the fire hydrant across the street...[smilie=2:
 
:D You forgot the K-member, whose failure should leave Stretch and I giggling like the idiots we are right up until we careen into something immovable.

By the way, if any of the tech-savvy guys think I need more cam, you're right... but it's what I've got. I accept donations of larger solid cams. :dance:

Maybe pushrods and rockers shattering like Glass Houses?

I wouldn't be surprised if it lives past 7 grand tho'. All the small blocks I've had seemed indestructable.
 
Voted Peter Pan. But I'm thinnnin' rod bolt stretch may cause some of those flat-tops to play "Tag! You're it!" to the heads and/or some valves 'cause of the thin head gaskets and mebbe a piston will frag.

Admittedly, the LA has some crappy valvetrain angles... but y'know, pushrods are cheap, and I have extra rockers so if either of those fail, well, I can rebuild and go for the Big Bang Theory.

I don't think the pistons are gonna hit anything being around .050" down the bore. rofl

Heh, heh...was just poking around in the shed the other day and stumbled across the historic artifact you provided me from that mill, I shall cherish it forever. ;)
 
"There wasn't a redline, so I shifted it at the highest number."

The highest number on my Auto Meter tach being 8,000 RPM, the stock 727 doing its normal "actually shift 4-600 RPM after you move the lever, and the engine being a stone-stock 139,000-mile '73 340. :doh:
 
Speaking of broken pieces, barney has a few fresh ones to pass around....more than a few actually. :shifty:
