Factory 8.75 Axels Vs. Spool?

The real question is.

Will the axels in my '66 8.75 in the wagon last if I put a spool in there?


Getting real tired of the ole peg legger and I'm too poor for a SG.


It see's mostly highway and some in town driving.

Yep, BAD idea for the street! Hurts most in Turning situations, as one wheel cant turn slower than the other one.
 
Since I run 75 series tires on the back they skid pretty easy. :D


I welded the spiders up in that "Aspenvertible" and it worked out just fine but it spent 90% of it's time in the dirt.
 
A spool is a baaaaddd idea for the street.

A used sure -grip might be the answer. Hard to find in these parts, I know, but....
 
Naturally I would go for a SG but they are like $600 new and impossible to find used. :doubt:

I've got 9.25 SG's out the wazoo. :D

Mind you, the last purchase I made from somone else here hasn't worked out so well...
 
Nothing is keeping him from here....he just doesn't net much anymore from what I hear. ;)
 
A spool is entirely manageable on the street. It's not ideal, but I assume no one here has the driving skills of a freshly-licensed 16 year old. I say it's manageable from experience-my mustang has a spool in it, and I've driven it in rainy and dry weather. I have not driven it in snow, but I can't imagine it would be drastically different than in rain, just less traction.

Now, will the axles hold is a different question that I don't know the answer to. The axles in the mustang are aftermarket, and they've held fine.
 
the SG in my 69 is probably tighter than when it left the factory...always thought it had no slip ...sure you can run a spool around town if your not afraid to chirp em in front of cops...the axles would probably hold but dont count on em to last forever

The housings are all WAY too wide. I only have C-body and one truck rear.:doh:


The reason I put the 8.75 in the wagon is I didn't want to run a 2.45 geared 8.25 and I found the housing and 3 center sections (all open) for $300, so why not!?

As for chirping tires.............all the better! :D



What are a set of aftermarket axels worth?

Like v8440 said...no problem with a spool but without steel alxes it's a BAD IDEA...stock axles will break about 4 to 6 inches from the spline every time...about a week is all I've ever seen them last...most don't make it through the weekend...
even with real axles it's hard on the axle spline plus the car hoping around the corner even at a very low speed get's old in a hurry..."just from what I've seen over the years"

Except that DW's "street" is the highway out front of his house. And having ridden with him, even briefly in that wagon, I don't give the axles more than a few hours at best should he run a spool.

well as long as you made sure that the tires were spinning ..atleast a little bit there is no hoppy jerky thing......done a few welded spiders too..toooooooo much traction compound on the track did em in
