I walk through car shows pretty quickly. What stops me is people and cars that are interesting because they are different.

Someone doing their own thing with their own car? Go for it.
I may or may not like the result, but I don't like cauliflower. That doesn't mean no one else can like cauliflower.

That is about how I go through car shows myself. Love the off the wall, seldom seen and just odd cars, engines and options....that is what stops me.

I see a 69 Charger at MOPARFest every year with silver hood hinges on a black car. Not raw metal. Silver. They should be body colour. I don't say anything, but I wouldn't give them my business.

This. This always killed me when the shop I worked for brought cars to a car show.. They'd pick customers cars based on how much work we'd done, if the customer would be there, etc.. Never taking into consideration how garishly the customer might have asked us to build it. One of our customers had the interior of his Fiat done with Miata seats covered in faux ostrich skin. Another had a Spitfire with every part from the shiny section of the Moss catalog on it.. Picture somebody covering their car in fly paper and driving through the accessories aisle of Pep Boys. We had rebuilt his motor, gearbox, entire brake system, and electrical system.. Were the looks indicative of our potential? Sure hope not. Indicative of the customer's bad taste? Absolutely, but you can't hang that sign off the mirror at the car show. It was embarrassing. I'm sure many potential customers had the same reaction you did, DCF

Not that I put my cars in shows, but if I did, you'd also see a long list of work done to some of them in Sharpie on the underside of the hood.. Not showing off, just can never remember what I've done to which or when I did it last.. It really pisses off my one buddy every time he sees it on one.. Especially my nicer cars. The beauty is, that Sharpie comes off with acetone.. I haven't told him that though, he believes in their permanance.

Car shows? Those are the grass parking-lot things at swap meets, right?

If I finish my day's scouring at the far end of the swap meet and the layout allows it, like at Jefferson, I might walk through it on the way out. The only cars I'll shred aloud are the ones with showboards talking about how rare or original they are, because the owner clearly didn't have time to sit there and brag verbally. Yeah, it might be the last of the true letter cars and all that, but your "rare, original" 300K didn't come with dual Edelbrock carbs, Rallye wheels or M3 paint.

The last car show I attended was as a requirement of my job. The company for which I worked sponsored it, and I was expected to be there in my uniform. Being salaried, I took time off during the week to cover my "shift" at the show.

There's one coming up here that I look forward to every year.. It's a mediocre swap meet, but the whole deal is thrown by the Hudson club.. Always some great stuff laying around. Last year there was a v8 convertible Cord, Essexes, Terraplanes, Some neat Mopar homebrew stuff. And of course, all the Hudsons.. I love the factory hot rod look of the Hudsons.

I like outdoor car shows/cruise nites just fine...particularily those that involve a bit of a drive getting to/from. They are a rare chance to relax for a few hours and enjoy some sort of social activity. Might be why I object so strongly to some dick-less wonder trying to spoil the day by being an idiot...

I have absolutely no problem with people building their cars their way as long as they don't try to pass it off as "real deal" built that way. Clones are cool too, as long as you don't try to pass it off as a real deal factory built car. If you like it, why lie about it? Changing tags and vins is immoral and illegal.

Except for what You did Not A Duster. That's fucking hilarious! I love it!

I came here to look at cool pictures, and have been thoroughly entertained by Nodda complaining about car show critics, and I was also impressed by his "dick-less wonder" rant.
