Diesel delay due to emissions, OBD

According to Ram engineering director Mike Cairns, the reason for the long delay with the Ram ProMaster diesel —whose power plant is a four cylinder Fiat design, not the familiar V6 from VM —was mainly the tuning needed to meet emissions requirements, and the need to have the electronics meet the required OBDII standards.
The main differences, he said, are in the OBDII setup, calibrations, and the after-treatment of the exhaust.
This is an engine that our Fiat brethren have designed and developed for Europe, for Europeans; we had to make a lot of changes to meet the US requirements. [US diesel standards] are actually tougher than Europe. That took some time. But it’s out there and well-received
