Cummins flare side pick-up...

Over on the DTR forum I frequent for 1st gen trucks this fellow, Cseby, posted up some pics and info about the truck he just finished up. I thought you guys would appreciate the work he did.

Here's his truck when he bought it...

He then decided that he wanted a flare side box for his truck. Since original Mopar flare side truck box's are rarer then hens teeth he stared looking at other alternatives. What he ended up using was a flare side truck box from a 80-90? Chevy truck. He cut out the floor of the chevy box, and the floor from the original ram box and welded the two together...therefore making sure that the new box would mount properly to the frame.

I think it looks darn good. Matches the square cut lines of the cab.
 
That does look pretty good. I would've added LRT stacks, in about a 4" diameter, but other than that :2thumbs:
 
I've never been a big stack fan. IMO... I think it would ruin the look of the truck...as well as the box.
 
I was wondering why he couldn't find a Dodge bed, I've seen several down here, then I noticed he's in the belly button of the rust belt.

Stacks have to be tasteful; to big diameter, to tall, wrong cut, etc just ruins it for me. I've seen some I wouldn't mind putting on my truck. I saw a truck identical to mine with 4" stacks, miter cut even with the top of the cab. I thought it looked good, if I did it there would have to be a benefit, noise reduction, increase in power or mileage.

The ones I saw were a little shorter than these.

I have to be honest, I don't like it. I don't think it matches at all. However, in all fairness, I don't think Dodge stepside fenders would've looked any better; in fact I think they'd be much worse on the later cab. I think the overall square shape of the Chevy fenders is better, but it's still not even remotely cohesive. Those fenders scream "Chevy"; I knew what they were before I read the description. Here in the land of super-rust it's not uncommon to see trucks with wrong-generation or even wrong-make boxes on them. 95% of people would look at that and think, "Poor fella couldn't find a Dodge box." What's next... first-gen Camaro quarters welded to an E-body 'Cuda? :D
 
My friend has MBRP exhaust stacks in the bed of his truck almost exactly like the ones in the picture. It's obnoxiously loud. There's no point in trying to speak under acceleration, and even at cruise you have to raise your voice. Much like converting to a stepside, all he did was decrease the usefulness of the truck, which is a Cummins 3500 dually.
 
I have to agree with Jass. It just looks,well...off. :huh:

Oh, and stacks belong on semi's. They are sofa king gay on a pickup. :dgt:

Mine is obnoxious under load, especially with a loaded trailer. Previous owner straight piped it. I THOUGHT about stacks, with both trucks, just can't justify loss of bed space. I've decided on a 5" exhaust, with a muffler and a 5" tip.
 
I once sold a queen size mattress to a guy with a Dodge truck with bed mount stacks. As soon as I got the mattress half way into the bed of his truck, he realized what a dumb idea his stacks were. Like Jass and Beeper said, not only do they look retarded as hell but, your pick-up truck just became pretty much useless. :doh:
 
on a step side the stacks work...

the chev box doesnt look bad but it dont look :"right" either..but as doc said i doubt the 70s box would look any better sadly....at which point ida changed the cab and fenders to go with the right box
 
I bet 90% of the people who see that truck will have no clue that it isn't a dodge box. Only a small number of us guys who could actually identify that box. Regardless I think this Chevy box works better with the truck lines then a true dodge flare side box....it's way to rounded on the fenders to match the body lines.

I just installed a muffler on the crew cab yesterday...still loud, but has lost it's obnoxiousness....;)
 
Around here, anyone that would notice it's a stepside would wonder why it's got the wrong box on it. This is super-hyper-redneck truck lovin' country, and even those who couldn't identify exactly what's wrong would still say something just doesn't look right about it. The lines really don't match at all.

When I had the Wiener Dodge, it crossed my mind to do a 4-door Li'l Red, but with a Cummins. I probably would've done the stacks on that truck simply for authenticity's sake, but I really don't like them on any pickup be it stepside or fleetside. Stacks simply don't belong on pickups... still, a 4-door Li'l Red would be pretty unique, particularly a D200 with an oil-burner belching black smoke from the stacks. I had abandoned the idea pretty quickly because I didn't want to lose box capacity on a truck that was already a shortbox. After all, trucks are for towing and hauling and nothing else. Doing anything to decrease the capacity of either job makes no sense to me.

For the record, "Flare Side" is a Ford trademark term.
 
I like the step side look but hate the chevy fenders. I think dodge fenders would have been better. I also hate the "hack job" look of his tail pipe. Crappy untucked exhaust drives me bat shit crazy. Why put all that time and effort into the rest of the build, then just give up on the exhaust? Tuck that shit! Nothing turns me off more than seeing a car or truck that someone put tons of time and effort into only to see thay gave up when it came to the details!

That tail pipe looks awefull from the back! Perhaps a rear bumper would help.
 
The last pic shows how he redid the exhaust...a bunch of us all gripped about it and he changed it the next day.

I can appreciate doing what you want with a vehicle, but that conversion, from a looks and practicality standpoint, belongs in the WTF thread. I can see where one would see the resemblance of the GM fenders and the late Dodge lines, but.........why? I have even stronger feelings about stacks. Those turds are the ultimate way of saying "I'm a fucking hillbilly, and damn proud of it!" If you see a pickup with stacks, they don't tow with it. If anyone did, they'd pull off the stacks the following day, or get ear plugs. Straight piped inlines resonate in the worst possible way.
 
Hmmm...it's funny I like it, and thought the reception here on Moparnuts would be more positive. Shows how well I know you clowns eh...:D
