Clutch

My driving habits are kinda hard on the clutch, sorry to say.

I smoked the clutch doing a foot-on-the-brake burnout at the 7-11 last night. Showing off sometimes gets the best of me, but why else woudl I want to own one of these cars? :)

I installed a cenerforce in a turned up Toyota last yr and he has told me that he has gotten it so hot that it quits and after a half hr or so it comes right back. Hard to believe but Ive driven it and it doesnt chatter or slip at all still. Just food for thought. [smilie=e: P.S. Line locks are cheap compared to new clutches [smilie=e:

That's the same way this clutch is, it'll hold until it gets hot, then it turns completely loose under high torque once it's hot. It's still driveable, just a little hard to shift sometimes.

I bet when I pull it the disk looks OK but the PP springs are just not strong enough to hold up to the torque. Once the disk, PP ring, and flywheel get hot enough to slip there's not enough squeeze to stop it.

BTW, it's a B&B PP, I'm using it without an overcenter spring, and the pedal action is not heavy at all. Probably a good sign of a pansy-azzed PP setup. :)

I hear you on the line-lock, but I should probably quit being an idiot and start focusing on getting the car to hook and go instead of showing off how much smoke I can produce. [smilie=e:

They make a 10.95” HD plate (number 428) but it seems no matching disc.

Hey Jass, I've been looking around and have been led to believe that a 10.95 PP uses an 11" disk. The diff is the bolt pattern on the PP, it's kinda like an adapter to put an 11" disk under a PP with the 10.5 bolt pattern. You ever heard of that?

You've been led incorrectly. The 10.95" disc is actually physically smaller than the 11". Technically you can make it work, but if the bolts are installed wrong, the edges of the 11" disc will hit the 10.95" pressure-plate bolts. It was a big customer complaint when I worked at Year One; if you call them @ (800) 950-9503 and ask them to read you the upsell on part number FD03SET or FD06SET, I'm sure they'll tell you just what I am. ARP bolts may solve the problem since they're small-head, flanged bolts.

I'm sure neither Chrysler nor Year One has fixed that problem yet. Those FD numbers* existed when I started and were done badly; believe me when I tell you I have a couple weeks' worth of research into Chrysler clutches and flywheels that I did when the Ram line got added. Hell, I still have a lot of it here (hence the reason I had the Ram numbers). Year One has jumped on the Centerforce bandwagon (sorry, I don't trust diaphragm clutches) but they still have the Ram PowerGrip sets listed. They also have numbers for some serious, race-type Ram parts but they no longer list them in the catalog. Bastards... oh well, they were payin' me well for the work. :D

As I mentioned, that Ram 10½" setup I recommended will be more than enough to hold your engine. It's a seriously tough piece. No offense, but I would be surprised to find your 440 makes nearly the power that the near-13:1 solid-cammed motor in that Super Bee did.

*Hint to all you kids using Year One catalogs: if the part number begins with "FD", you can most-likely still get it at your Chrysler dealer, either Mopar Performance or straight-up parts books. The one of the inside jokes in R&D was that "FD" stood for "From the Dealer" or "From Dallas" (Dallas Chrysler being the dealer they bought from at that point).

One thing that almost makes sense on the diaphram / borg and beck type comparison is that supposedly spring pressure remains constant throughout the service life of the disc wheras when coil springs get longer they also get weaker. Is this possible?

No offense taken, I'm a realist - I've just got a well-done stock rebuild, not a race car. The most that's going to change on it in the near future is a bigger cam and a double pumper - I figure real world the most that engine will ever get to is about 450 HP with updates.

But I did check out the the Ram site, they list a 88773HDX as the 10.95" heavy duty kit. I guess if they sell it as a kit it has to work together without problems. Guess being the operative word. :)

On the 10.95 in the car, you may or may not remember but I lost a washer for the PP bolts back a year ago - and if I used a normal Gr 8 washer it'd hit the disk. I had to grind the #!*%&^$$!(# out of a washer to get it down to the same size as the 3/8" cap head attachment bolts. So I know exactly what you're talking about when it comes to the disk hitting bolts.

Finally, I'm with you on the diaphragm plates. Those are Chevy parts in my eye, and I'm not putting no steenkin Chubby Chebby parts on my Mopar. :D

BTW, I didn't realize Year One sold clutches. Man I bet those are pricey with their markup!

Update - I found the Ram HDX part numbers, but neither Summit nor Jeg's carries them. Summit has the PG, but not with the HD pressure plate.

McLeod has a 10.95" setup, it's kinda pricey at $430 or so.

Centerforce doesn't make a 10.95" setup in 23-spline at all.

I still haven't bought anything.

Well, despite what I said above about a Centerforce being a Chevy clutch, I installed a dual-friction setup this weekend. Reasons were:

1) overcenter spring is already out, a heavy B&B plate might mean I'd have to install it
2) gina likes to drive the car, a light pedal is a benefit in that regard
3) I ain't getting no younger myself, again a light pedal is a benefit
4) McLeod is too $$$
5) Couldn't fiund the Ram clutch Jass recommended

I did heed Pierre's advice on the 10.5" being enough clutch.

We'll see how it goes, right now the driveway to the garage is scraped down 4" in prep for paving. Since I can't get the car out of the garage anyway, there's no rush to put it back together.

P.S. the flywheel and pressure plate were both cupped, the outside edge was way higher than the inside so I guess all I had was the edge of the disk for bite.

Doc,when did you work at year 1 ?,I used to travel thru Tucker twice a week, years ago,and stop to pick up stuff all the time,,,Bob,I missed this thread, but I woulda' just recommended the ol' tried and true hayes 40lb. 143 tooth wheel and they're Borg and beck HD clutch and press. plate,,
